I am hearing them on the RI Statewide 800 system North Zone TG 1547. Not sure if they are still simulcasting on 154.800

Hi, Ken, they have been using 154.800 MHz for months - the old NPPD frequency, because the radios operated better there. The PD went to the 800 MHz trunked system, encrypted. About 2-3 weeks ago NPFD went to this system, also, but simulcast on 154.800 MHz still, but now it sounds like s*** - muffled. Eventually they will pull the plug on that. And Providence FD went to this system and already pulled the plug on 154.370 MHz. I have an 800 MHz handheld scanner, but not digital, doesn't handle trunking. My mobile and base scanners don't do 800 MHz at all. So I have to upgrade everything. When you do, specify a digital 800 MHz scanner with trunking. You enter the frequency (868.7125 MHz), then enter the talkgroups that you want to listen to. NPFD is TG 1548 for dispatch.

They are now full time on the 800, 154.800 and 154.250 have had no simulcast for a couple of days now. TG's 1547 and 1548 are dispatch and fireground.....unfortunately, the BC350 will not do digital trunking.

Also, they are on the North system, which has a control channel of 868.5125, not the one you referenced, which is the Providence System control channel.

Too bad they can't simulcast on the vhf frequencies like Hartford has been doing for years. I was in Warwick the other week and couldn't pick up Providence pd on their digital system. Not like the old days...........like last year LOL

I'm told by an NPFD member that in about a week, Motorola is coming back to hardwire a simulcast. So maybe we can still use our VHF scanners. Not sure for how long that will last, though. Right now there is no simulcast from either Providence FD or NPFD, and supposedly none planned for Providence FD.

What type of trunking system do I select for my scanner? MOT 800/900, EDACS, P25? I'm not picking up anything on the MOT 800/900. Not sure if it's due to range, or wrong selection of TSYS.

Thanks, I just programmed that in. I'm still getting nothing. I live 30 miles from Providence (Taunton), so although the VHF was no problem at all with a telescoping antenna inside the house, the 800 MHz system may not reach here as well.

OK, this is my first time using a scanner with digital trunking. It's a Realistic PRO-197. Here's how I have it set up:

North Providence: P25 Auto trunking system on control frequencies: 867.675, alternates 868.5125 and 867.400. Talkgroups 1547 and 1548.

Providence: P25 Auto trunking system on control frequencies: 868.7125, alternates 868.275 and 868.150. Talkgroup 10101.

So far getting nothing. Should I be using P25 manual instead? I don't understand the difference. Are these frequencies correct?

Sadly, I don't think you're going to get any of the RISCON system in Taunton. The easiest way to determine if you can is to program 868.875 (South Control Channel), 868.5125 (North Control Channel) and 868.7125 (Providence Control Channel) into the radio as FM frequencies and see if you hear the data being transmitted on the control channel. If you can't, you won't be able to hear the system.

Nothing at all on the Providence city network all day. Not a single hit. So I'm out of range, I guess. Maybe an external antenna would work, or I'll put this in my car. I had no problem picking any northern RI FD on my home scanner with VHF frequencies.

Realizing that a lot of people have lost the ability to monitor a lot of RI departments, I have upgraded my ProScan software, and added a feed at Radio Reference that has the entire Rhode Island Statewide Communications Network (RISCON).

The feed works best with the Winamp player, as it supports the text tags so that you know what you're listening to, but will work on any of the players. I just updated the text tags to all known talkgroups, so it should be pretty comprehensive. It can be found here:

Rhode Island Statewide Communications Network(RISCON) Live Scanner Audio

I also have the Providence FD dedicated feed at:

Providence Fire Department Live Scanner Audio

Hopefully, this will help to alleviate any withdrawal that people are having. :)

Moved the scanner about 6 feet across the room. Providence FD dispatch is now coming in loud and mostly clear, with an occasional word or two breaking up like it's underwater-garbled. But range is NOT an issue in Taunton, only the positioning of the scanner. 8)

Haven't picked up North Providence yet, but they're far less active. Should know before the night is over. Will try to be near the scanner at their radio checks, 0800 and 1800.

Last 2 nights, have not heard a single transmission from the scanner from PFD or NPFD. Conventional VHF and UHF channels from 30 miles away are fine. So it's all or nothing with digital - if the signal is marginal, it fails completely.
