Northern Gwinnett Noobie

I live in northern Gwinnett County and have just picked up a scanner. I easily found Barrow and Hall County frequencies but haven't heard a peep from Gwinnett County. Anyone have any help they may wish to offer? Frequencies I should be listening to? Police? Fire? Anything?

Hi Dacula - welcome to Atlanta scanning. First off, if you don't have a DIGITAL-capable scanner, you won't be able to hear Gwinnett, Hall, Forsyth, Cobb and before long, DeKalb, Atlanta or other agencies. Radio Shack sells their own brand as well as GRE scanners. Uniden sells the Bearcat line - all are good. I have the Bearcat BC396XT and listening to the digital systems (unless they're encrypted) is good. Hall has most of their system excrypted but the last time I checked, I believe Fire Dispatch is in the clear. Forsyth has an all-digital system and also simulcasts their Fire Dispatch on 154.010 (PL 131.8).

Thanks for the info. I don't have a digital scanner. I bought a relatively inexpensive scanner to stay in touch with Briscoe Field (I'm a pilot.) And the police activity was just extra but very interesting. I get all police dispatches and responses from the cars from Hall County, same for Barrow County but nothing from Gwinnett. I now understand why I don't get Gwinnett.

I checked out the 396XT you use. Nice unit but $500 makes ths a hobby versus just a goof off activity. I guess I'll just stick with listening to air traffic and scrap what's happening with the cops.

Gwinnett Police Department is encrypted and you will not be able to hear anything. You should still hear fire with a digital scanner.

Hall county SO and the city PD's are on the Hall P-25 system and are encrypted. Are you sure that you are hearing the SO and city PD's and not someone else??
