My daily commute is Salt Lake County to Utah County. I listen in to UHP, and lately (past 6 months) I noticed really bad reception north of MM280 until reaching the county line (going NB of course).

I am currently using Utah County Simulcast and its very weak on the northern few miles of the county. I tried using Nelson Peak but then I get the same weak signal problem, just a bit farther south. I understand that West Mountain is a part of Utah County Simo now, so it may be I am picking up channels off West Mountain which is pretty far south.

Any suggestions for a single-site solution? I tried scanning both Nelson and Utah Simo but the scanner missed half the conversations due to overscanning. Those sites have pretty large frequency sets.

I'm sure you've already thought of this, but is the scanner's attenuator enabled?

Not sure, I will have a look. I drove from Vegas north to SLC last night and noticed STRONG reception at the far south border next to West Mountain, and again it faded rapidly farther north. I will look at your suggestion this evening. (Certainly something I can live with)

I discovered that Salt Lake Simulcast reaches out to mid Utah County with full strength. I swapped out Utah Simo for SL Simo and UHP Utah County works great. Go figure.

Just a follow up.

I have discovered that no matter what site I use (Nelson Peak, Salt Lake Simo, Utah County Simo) for scanning local UHP talk groups, there is an area around north Lehi for about 1-2 miles on I-15 where I get drop outs and lots of static. I can only surmise there is some local interference going on in that spot. North and south of there work fine. NSA perhaps? (Just kidding NSA)

I have noticed that even when i am on my cell phone i will drop calls going around the point of the mountain. I have also heard HAM operators using the repeater on Lake mountain talk about how there is a dead spot in that area. I think it is the wind that is always blowing there ;) JK
