I have been monitoring since Saturday at 3PM. I smelled some gas in my house (Sterling area) at around 1PM and just opened windows and such. I also have a "gasponder" and could take my own measurements (was at or below 1ppm which is the resolution of the instrument). I was thinking same as someone above that the rain may of affected things.

Sunday AM the calls are coming from the Leesburg area, so there has been a progression from the Sterling area W to Ashburn, and now W to Leesburg. As crazy as the official explanation seems, maybe this makes sense with the E->W progression (and fewer calls to the E now).

but if that were the case (too much odorant), why are people smelling it? if they can smell it, doesn't that mean something is leaking? but, maybe that's why I'm not in that line of work. :)

Also, what is causing the 'difficulty breathing', 'dizziness', and 'respiratory arrest' calls that are in the same area as the gas leaks?

The Washington Gas spokesperson on the radio is saying that "Due to the high level of odorant, residents are smelling gas from the tiniest of pinhole leaks that they normally wouldn't notice." So, if I'm interpretting what she's says correctly, that means tiny pinhole leaks are normal? If so, wouldn't a tiny pinhole leak in a closed home gradually build up over time and become a timebomb waiting for ignition?

yep, I agree with you. WTOP's website has an article up now:
http://www.wtopnews.com/?nid=600&sid=901018

I tried to leave a comment, but they want you to create a login first.

the comment I was going to leave was close to the ones I have left here. I was also going to say that Washington Gas should reimburse the counties of Loudoun and Fairfax. these guys have been working for almost 24 hours now checking homes. Washington Gas needs to send people out with the fire depts to give them some help. this is BS, it's taking away resources for real emergencies (if this is nothing to worry about). also, if it is "pinhole leaks that are normal" why are they still red tagging ovens and water heaters?

Definitely more than pin hole leaks. Otherwise I doubt they would be getting the readings they are. I'm sure there are more occurrences, it's just that people are away on vacation.

I think there is excessive pressure. It bleeds off and that's when someone smells it. It sounds like by the time the FD gets there it has already dissipated in many cases. Other times it is a greater release of gas and the FD can get a high reading.

Just tuning back in after being away from the radio for a few hours. Sounds like they have disbanded the command posts and are back to dispatching gas leak calls as normal.

Starting at 6pm I spent 13 hours yesterday running from one inside gas leak to another. I was on Engine 6 (for you guys listening on the radio, that was me you were hearing  ). We were told, and what I was telling people, was that the gas company had accidentally over-pressurized a 24" main along the Loudoun/Fairfax border and additionally added too much mercaptan (the gas smell). This caused relief valves all over the county to vent tiny amounts of gas, and lots of gas smell.

Although I ran to countless homes and businesses I only turned off the gas due to an actual leak at one home, one apartment complex and one business. The tagging was of damaged meters and appliances that did not handle the extra pressure gracefully. Everywhere else there was no detectable gas, just odor. Any gas that had leaked had naturally dissipated by the time we arrived on scene.

Here is Washington Gas' press release:

http://washingtongas.mediaroom.com/

They say "there have been no evacuations" so perhaps someone didn't keep them up to date on what I was running around and doing last night :)

Tim, seems that they've shut down the command posts, but I'm still hearing a good number of 'inside gas leak' calls coming in.

Yeah I am hearing them. Looks like they're still sending a reduced response though (1 Engine instead of 2 Engines, a Truck and an Ambulance.)

I'm glad Tim was able to give us some more info then we were getting from the news. he also confirmed what we were thinking...that it was more then what Washington as was letting on. typical of a company like that.

Sounds like it could be a wild night in Fairfax County. A short time ago there was foot pursuit of some Hispanic males, robbery suspects, on Ch-6. The search is on and Fairfax-1 has just cleared the hospital from the previous incident. Latest report is they may have located the suspects.

What is happening in Woodbridge

Did anyone hear what happend in the Woodmark apartments in Woodbridge? I got in on it late but I think its a multiple shooting. The last I head was that the media was on the scene.

I turned on my scanner just as the Medstar chopper was landing to pick up for a gun shot to the head. They had several witnesses that identified the suspect vehicle as a green Chevy Tahoe and with the help of the licence plate number vice setup outside the suspects apartment. Not sure if they ever caught him or not and I'm not able to find anything in the local news. Seems only shootings in Prince Georges County and the District get media attention in this area.

Stuff like this makes me wonder why Prince William County PD don't have their own air support. Seems with all the tax revenue they are bringing in it would not be too much of an issue. It's gotta get old calling in Fairfax County for help from Fairfax One several times a day.
