Northstar has relocated from UMDNJ to Somerset Airport Bedminster, Somerset County at the intersection of RT287 & 78. All dispatch remains the same. The NJ ST PD radio system works well for them at the airport.
The CTAF for SMQ is 123.00.

Helicopter set to lift off this week
Thursday, February 03, 2005
BEDMINSTER -- Officials with the Northstar Medevac program hope to begin operations at Somerset Airport by the end of the week.

Northstar Air Medical Coordinator Terry Hoben said he hoped to have one helicopter stationed at the airport by Friday.

"We're getting the office set up, the phone lines are up and so is the water," Hoben said.

The use of the airport as a base of operations has been a contentious issue in the township since it was first proposed last year. One issue that remains is a question of an existing township ordinance that allows only fixed wing aircraft to be stored at the airport.

Representatives from the airport are scheduled to appear before the Zoning Board of Adjustment on Feb. 16 to ask for clarification on the ordinance to determine if it also allows helicopters to be stored there.

The current plan is to use temporary trailers as an office for the flight crews and hangers on-site to house the helicopter when it is not in use.

Alan Harwick, a member of a group opposed to the use of the airport by Northstar, said he was surprised when he heard how close the program was to beginning operations at Somerset Airport. He also said he opposed the idea of the helicopter being stored at the airport.

"I still don't feel that even with the trailer there that it followed that the helicopters would be permitted to use the hangars," he said, based on his group's interpretation of the existing ordinance.

In 2004, the State Police sought a temporary use permit to allow the helicopter to be stationed at the airport to improve response times to incidents in Central Jersey. Currently, the helicopters are stationed at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark.

The Township Committee initially approved the temporary use permit, but later revoked it, prompting a court battle. A judge overturned the township's decision, allowing for plans to station the Medevac chopper at the airport to go ahead.

Plans for a permanent facility to house the helicopters at Somerset Airport are still to be heard before the Planning Board.

Northstar is a technological marvel. ...did my internship at UMDNJ. I was lucky enough to get a nice tour of the helicopter one day. The crew also showed me the frequency agile radio onboard. They said it can transmit on any frequency between 30 - 512 MHz.

There are currently a few Sikorskys in service including Northstar:
Last I checked N5NJ was Northstar, N9NJ was Southstar. N1NJ and N7NJ are two backup Sikorskys. State Police operate a few Bell 206's too. N3NJ is a Bell 206 L4 that's used for law enforcement, mainly traffic enforcement along the Garden State Parkway. The other two Bell 206's are N2NJ (206 L3) and N6NJ (206B).

Hooyah on the "find a new acid pad" how about they use the now almoast abandoned picatinny rotary wing field? Haha ill volentier to clean their toilets, and give the protestors tune ups. "Anyone want a free ride on north star? Arent you a protestor? **CRACK** ...... REMS weve got a 42 year old whiney sign holding male with a severe fracture in the lower back...." sorry i couldnt help myself lol

Thats interesting info on the other choppers that you mentioned, because I know Ive heard choppers on the air that used call signs like "Helocopter 6 to northstar command" But not northstar, now that makes sense.

I programmed the entire state police north region talkgroups into my bc796D, and then LOCKED them all out except for northstar and the aviation unit! haha so yea, Im a north star fan, nothing else on that system interests me.

NorthSTAR is dispatched on REMCS 5 (155.2950 MHz S (PL 85.4 Hz)) and SouthSTAR is dispatched on their NJSP TRS TG.

BTW, please check the RR DB/use the search function before posting and don't bump old threads. Thanks, and welcome to RR.

or go to:eastcoastscanning for the latest, accurate,no B/S info on the web

No offense, but that east coast scanning website is a lesser version of Radio Reference. That's where all of the frequencies on there come from anyway.

State Police helicopters have their own talkgroups on the trunk systems and have programmable radios to communicate with local pd's. I hear them on SPEN 1 and SPEN4 all the time. Wildwood doesn't have a police helicopter, the towns usually call the state police when they need a helicopter. In Northern NJ they sometimes use the Rockland County chopper

148,

A lesser version? I beg to differ with your assessment - and your allegation that the material on there was stolen from here. A locally operated board, that is carefully maintained, will always - in my book - trump a national board. I am not here to bash RR, but there is simply too much going on to maintain an accurate nationwide database. I offer, as one example, my own (assisted ably by e911god) sub-board at http://www.eastcoastscanning.com/viewforum.php?f=41 Compare this to the Database maintained here http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&ctid=1860 and tell me which is superior?

Don't take it personal. If you look at the stuff from NJ, which I did, just about every frequency says Credit=RR. I never said the word theft. I like the word copied.

I don't live in Orange Co. so I wouldn't look normally.
