Not Picking Up Frequencies in Buffalo

Question for people in Buffalo:

I have a bearcat hand-held scanner. I am a volunteer firefighter in Amherst but I can not seem to pick up the Amherst fireground communications. I have the right frequencies but it just wont pick up anything. This is the same with my minitor (programed to the F-2).

I should ask around, but does Amherst Fire Control only allow portables and base radios to pick up those frequencies? Anyone else having this problem? Any solutions?

You may just be out of range. Many times fireground or direct unit to unit freqs are low power so they dont interfere with anybody else.

Where are you monitoring these; home, in the car?
Are you using something other than the somewhat useless whip on the radio?
