So I got my Wideband SWL/Scan Antenna today. I am house sitting for my parents this weekend so I have it up on their chimney, witch is the highest part of their house. I have to say I am not to impressed with the reception. I even have the global ATT on. I get better reception down here with my 800mhz rubber duck. I have it on a pro 97 handheld. Is there something I should try to make me more impressed? I am listening to trunked systems mostly.

Fo9r one thing, try turning the attenuator off. Why use an external antenna to get more signal, then attenuate that signal?

You are overloading your Pro-97 with too much signal, this is a problem with the Pro-97 and big brother Pro-2055. Go to radio shack and buy the $6.00 FM trap with f fittings on it and insert it inline with your coax. Worked wonders for me! I have a 97 also.

Do they make such a thing as a N to F connector? then a F back to N connector? I went to the website and had no luck. Or am I missing something?? The Scanntanna ends in a female N connector so I have to use a N cord right???

Sorry for the rookie questions all!

My Scantenna is F female. The RG6 cable shipped with it is terminated F male at both ends.

But in answer you can adapt from N to F, the only way I've found to do it is two adapters: N to BNC, then BNC to F.

Question: Your current cable, what is each end terminated as?

[ Now, if someone knows of anywhere to get an N to F, I'd like to know about that item too (and genders of such). ]

Just what kind of antenna are we talking about here? From the subject of the original post, one would think you are talking about the Antennacraft "Scantenna", the bowtie crossed dipole thing. But the body of your post mentions SWL/ Scanning antenna, which the Scantenna really isn't. It is cut for the public service VHF/UHF bands, not Shortwave.

Ugh, I had one of those. It's just a vertical with a load of capacitor loaded coils.

Waste of time/money imho.

I am beginning to agree. Now with the FM trap on it, I can't get the control channels. Plus everything is low and has a lot of static to it.

But I'm not sure why you want/need them?
Macomb,

At least on my part I've at times had a cable run terminated as N male from previous use that I might move to another antenna.

So with ant.s such as the Scantenna that the balun is F female I wanted to (and did) adapt the N male 'down to' F male.

Important note. The secret to good signals is a frequency specific antenna. Must be cut for the bands you need. Wide Band type will allow signals you dont want to enter the scanner. FM/TV and others out of band. When the antenna is frequecy specific it actually ATT's the other bands.
