as a conversation between dp and someone on the talk group goes on, after each tx the channel used goes up one to the next available chronologically. any reason not to stay on the same channel? like with a 2 second response window

EDACS systems generally use what's referred to as transmission trunking by default. This means there is no hold time once the conversation "disconnects" from the voice channel. There is also message trunking which has a small hold time at the end of a conversation. It's more common on Motorola systems as I think it was/is the default. For Motorola there's also a subscriber side choice that uses message trunking but also causes the radio to switch back to the control/data channel to get an access grant before it talks on the active voice channel. This is called "PTT-ID".

I believe EDACS sticks with transmission as it's better for balancing the usage of the equipment. If a controller begins to favor a particular channel it increases the chance of PA or Exciter failure for that channel.
