have any of you guys in sydney set up a xts3000 or mts2000 to monitor the nsw grn ? i mean as in done correctly follow talkgroups etc thanks

All you need to do to is go down to a Dick Smith Electronics Shop and part with about $600 Aussie dollars for a Uniden 780 trunk-tracker. You don't need to do anything else except to follow the instructions on the scannsw website.
Depending on where you live in Sydney will determine what sites you can monitor. I listen mainly to Governor Phillip Tower in the CBD, as a lot of radios affiliate to it

i dont want to have to carry 2 radios. i use a mts2000 currently (soon to be xts3000) for uhf cb, police and my own channel i use so i would prefer to program only the one radio. also why spend $600 bucks for nothing ?

how do you get hold of an xts3000 in aust. without forking out around $1k USD?
I am running a 780 all be it in newcastle, but when I go to sydney I have 4 banks set up for 4 (fictional) regions in the scanner and it works fairly well. Although I would love an xts3000 so not to have to worry about control and voice ch's for every repeater. But the $ are too much for that luxury.

all the guys that I know using xts3000's have imported them into oz from the states costing us over $1grand US sometimes around $1400 US but thats the price you pay for listening to digital. why dont you get a mts2000 if you only listen to analouge

You can buy an XTS3000 here if you're willing to fart about with /\/\ and pay a huge wad of cash (depending on the options you get on your radio). Otherwise, you can buy a stolen radio, which most you might find for sale here are, as there are very few legitimately in private hands. Not something I would recommend.

To program your radio for GRN operation, you'll need a few things, such as:
A Smart{zone,net} option on your radio
System keys (which the GRN guys ain't gonna give you
)
RSS or CPS
You also need to be very careful about how you program your radio. If it transmits for any reason, especially with a bogus ID, the GRN guys will likely see it, and kill it over the air. Only they or Motorola will be able to unlock it, and you'll have to explain how it came to be inhibited, such as why you had a two-way radio programmed to operate on their network.
You may as well go down to Dick Smith and just buy one of their trunk-tracking scanners. Cheaper and easier.

So if you htink selling it on somehting like Ebay is a good idea, then expect a knock on the door from the feds. Its happened to a couple of people already.

Well selling your xts3000 on ebay should not always attract the Federal Police to your door. If you bought your radio in the U.S. which there are lots solds regularly and are purchased New by companies other than Emergency Service, chances are it wont be on the stolen list. Maybe in the U.S.?.
If you are unsure about the state of your radio contact Motorola and ask. The xts3000 model 3 were used at the Sydney Olympics and later sold to NSW emergency service for very cheap prices. If you know someone in the NSW Rural Fire Service you may be able to buy one off them, from memory they pay around $550 each for the old Olympics ones

As far as I know, some or all of QLD's police channels are encrypted digital around the CBD area. Not sure of country QLD area.
You can listed to them if your radio has the DES encryption option istalled on your radio but I am not sure if Encryption Keys are required for RX, if so then you might be stuffed.
Sometimes the keys will fall off and you will RX 'In The Clear' transmissions, but you might find yourself monitoring for a while.
