A 30-year-old woman is dead after she was ejected from a Ford Bronco during a Saturday night accident on the Uncompahgre Plateau near Nucla, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Toni Carver of Naturita was a passenger in the 1969 Ford Bronco that did not have seat belts, said Trooper Garrett Reich. The driver of the Bronco, Robert Greenwood, 33, of Naturita, was not injured and is being held in the Montrose County Jail on vehicular homicide charges, Reich said.
Reich said it appears the man and woman were engaged.
Carver, who was pinned beneath the Bronco after it rolled one-and-a-quarter times, was pronounced dead at the scene after witnesses and emergency personnel tried to resuscitate her, Reich said.
At approximately 7:40 p.m., troopers were dispatched to a large gravel pile near the Cottonwood Campground on 25 Mesa Road for a one-vehicle rollover. According to Reich, it appeared as if Greenwood was doing donuts in front of the gravel pile and tried to climb it in the Bronco. The vehicle didn’t make it up the pile and rolled, ejecting Carver, Reich said.
Alcohol is suspected to have been a factor in the accident.
