Hi. How many trunked systems can you put into a PSR-500? Also, how many talkgroups for each system can be put into the scanner. Or, how many talkgroups total can the 500 handle? Thanks.

The limits are based solely on available memory.

The PSR-500 has 1852 "blocks" for data storage. A trunking system takes either 4 (LTR and EDACS) or 10 (Motorola or Project 25) blocks. A talkgroup takes 1 block. Of course, there is no limit (apart from available memory) to how many talkgroups can be in a single trunked system.

So, if nothing else was programmed (i.e. no conventional channels, no search or sweeper ranges), you could have:
* one Motorola system with 1842 talkgroups
* two Motorola systems each with 916 talkgroups
* one Motorola system with 1000 talkgroups and one EDACS system 828 talkgroups
* etc.

(LTR TSYS + EDACS TSYS) x 4
+ (MOT TSYS + P25 TSYS) x 10
+ TGRP
= total
<total> must be less than or equal to 1852

To add CONV and SRCH/SWPR objects....

(LTR TSYS + EDACS TSYS) x 4
+ (MOT TSYS + P25 TSYS) x 10
+ TGRP
+ CONV
+ (SRCH + SWPR) x 2
= total
<total> must be less than or equal to 1852

(Spectrum Sweeper and Search Range objects take 2 blocks each, and Conventional Channels take 1 block)

Available memory - which means that it will depend on the type of trunking system, the number of talkgroups, the number of other objects.

Based on my formulae above, if you only put one talkgroup in each trunking system, and had no CONV, SRCH, or SWPR objects, you could have 168 Motorola or P25 trunking systems:
(<number of systems> x <10 blocks per system>) + (<number of systems> x <talkgroups per system> x <1 block per talkgroup>)
(168 x 10) + (168 x 1 x 1) = 1848.

If each Mot trunking system had 20 talkgroups, you could have 61 systems:
(61 x 10) + (61 x 20 x 1) = 1830

Trunking system: 10 blocks
Talkgroup: 1 block

Sum of all trunking systems and talkgroups must no greater than 1852 blocks (again, assuming no other objects).

Of course, it isn't really feasible to "scan" 50 trunking systems at one time. It does take a minimum amount of time to check each system's "control channel(s)" for data, and scanning too many at once could certainly lead to missed calls.

I currently have eight trunk systems and hundreds of conventional freqs in memory. It can have more trunking systems, but I have not added them yet.
