NV DPS In Northeastern NV & VHF Repeaters

In Northeastern Nevada NHP and its other divisions use VHF high band repeaters for the most part as the 800 MHz EDACS TRS is not working to expectations and usually only DOT will be heard on it. From time to time an NHP unit might come up on 800 MHz but its transmission is normally simulcasted on one or more VHF repeaters that are associated with the Region III (ELKO) Communications Center. On a recent trip from Las Vegas to Elko I noted the following VHF repeaters to be in use for NHP traffic. Listening to these usually permits you to monitor NHP over a very wide area of the State. I also noted that in the Comm Center the dispatchers use wireless headsets so they can walk around the dispatch center and still talk to units in the field. This center usually has only two dispatchers on duty who take all the phone calls, handle radio traffic, do CAD enteries, and run NCIC, NCJIS, and NLETS inquiries. They are kept busy.

The Grindstone site seems to be the best for Elko monitoring.

I heard an emergency call box at Dunphy, west of Carlin, last night, (ID 810 I believe). The ID was definately not the one shown on the Radioreference database. A dead motorhome was requesting a heavy tow back to Elko.

I'm still not hearing any mobiles, but do hear Elko Dispatch from time to time, (one sided communications).

Highway Callbox IDs'

In different areas of the state some IDs' which belong to DOT are used for callbox operations. My list includes:
06-150 Callbox 1
06-147 Callbox 2
06-145 Callbox 3

You might check them out in your travels. See the 3rd Ed. of the Southern Nevada Scanner Book for what looks like a complete list of the TGIDs' on the whole system. It shows 313 of them and the list is dated 06-30-2005.

With any of those frequencies you will be able to hear most of the NHP traffic that isn’t in Reno of Vegas. From Wells, I can hear traffic on I-80 from the Utah border all the way to about Lovelock and then on US95 from about Hawthorne to Tonopah. I don’t hear any US50 traffic. I think that is on a different channel with the other dispatcher. I also don’t hear any traffic south of the Elko/White Pine County line. That may also be on the same channel as the US50 traffic. I haven’t gotten any of the 800MHz sites around Wells to work and the one by Elko simulcasts Reno traffic. They’re still using all VHF in the rural areas, or at least Elko County.

I can verify that VHF is still being used in the Hawthorne area as one of the trunked VHF frequencies is 155.040, which is a simplex frequency for Mono County public works, who has a license for its use. Nevada does not and the NHP comes booming in over Mono County constantly. It is being broadcast from Corey Peak. It does not seem Mono County has CTCSS on their simplex so I don't know how they put up with the interference. I'm not really interested in figuring out how the VHF system works or to listen to it from here. I would like to be able to listen to Nevada DOT. They have the 800 Mhz system going and I can receive the data channel in the Mono Lake Basin but cannot from home. I find DOT radio to have more information regarding what a storm is doing than highway patrol radio does.
