NX-5000 Dual Deck Scan Question

Sorry if this is a frequently asked question i searched and wasn't able to locate an answer.

I work for a small police department we recently upgraded our radios to the NX-5000 series deck(S) with the KCH-20R control head. We primarily operate in VHF the county operates in UHF. with our old radios we were able to scan both UHF and our VHF channels simultaneously.

we have been told by our installer that this is not possible to scan both decks simultaneously. Can anyone definitively confirm this? seems a bit ridiculous that our old TK-5700/5800 radios could do this but the "latest and greatest" cannot.

(I'm getting tons of heat on this from my administration since i was the one who researched products and ultimately made the decision to purchase these radios.)

Your installer is mistaken.

You can absolutely scan on both decks. You'll need external speakers on the RF decks to do it right. The "selected" RF deck scan will pass audio to the control head speaker. The "unselected" RF deck will pass audio to the external speaker for that deck.

With the KCH-20 control head, you should be set up to show both RF decks on there.
The installer probably isn't too familiar with the setup on these radios. Rather than telling you it cannot be done, they should have researched it first.
Might need to talk to someone above the installer, hopefully someone with some more understanding of the radio.

Thanks for the reply, we currently run one external speaker, would we need to add another? or does the KCH20 have an internal speaker?

My KCH20 does display both RF decks..

Should i attempt to locate another installer or is there some literature i can share with him?

You'd need the KES-5 speaker hooked up to the back of the KCH-20 head. That would become the "select" audio. There's probably other ways to do it, but I don't recall off the top of my head.

Yes, find another installer.
- A good installer who works for a Kenwood shop would have access to the indepth manuals for these radios.
- A good installer would research it if he didn't know the answer.

You may be limited by your location, as in only one Kenwood shop in your area, but I'd still check around.
What they need to do is look at the correct manuals for the radios.
