To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I was told you need a system key for each system you want to monitor regardless of whether or not you are authorized to transmit on the system. The system key is also a Kenwood specific format so you can't just use existing keys you may have for Motorola systems. The system admin need to write a letter to Kenwood in order for Kenwood to release the key to the user.

I would like confirmation on this as well. Would also like confirmation whether you can listen to trunked systems without a system key by checking a RX only box similar to Harris or BK Radio/RELM.

System key request have to be sent to Kenwood systems support for processing. 800$ deal roughly but that allows access to the p25 network portion of the radio with the skf file. There is however, a way to listen only, the gid can be set to RX only

Guys,

You can monitor P25 9600 systems with no system key. Just add all voice channels and prgoram proper NACs (they are will be different for earch site in one system). You can easily get data you need with Uniden or DSD. And add all channels to scan list, or switch to Zone Scan (to scan entire zone). This is known as Non-affiliate trunking scan.

N3AAG...while that will work, you will have to listen to the entire system including DPW, Road Maintenance, etc. That method does not allow you to scan individual talkgroups such as using a conventional channel to call up a trunked scan list (like with Motorola radios). I'm not looking for that. Im authorized on a few trunked systems but like to monitor others while I travel. Having the ability to program the system as RX only and the system key issue I mentioned is my question.

Evans,

So the skf file is a file that opens the trunked programming portion of the software ? If so, once in that section of the software, do you need a separate file for each individual system ? Can you program more than one system (the 5x20 only allowed one system). If you program to RX only the talkgroups, does the radio still affiliate ?

That method does not allow you to scan individual talkgroups

Have you tried already? Are 100% sure? Have you looked at Channel Edit > P25 -> Talkgroup ID setting? It's there and looks like what you need to receive only wanted TGIDs. I haven't checked it with NX5000, but it wors fine on Motorola. It's easy and free way. And absolutely legal for everyone.

Having the ability to program the system as RX only and the system key issue I mentioned is my question

U R kidding! It's impossible, because radio sends requests to infrastratucture. Affiliate request and many others, etc. Full feature trunking CANNOT be RX ONLY.

Your radio will do such things:

"08/11 09:07:23","Affiliate",4011,"T: 102 DT: 8/11/16@1:51",663,"TG: 4011 DT: 8/11/13@9:07"
"08/11 09:10:03","Affiliate",4011,"T: 102 DT: 8/11/16@1:51",600,"TG: 4011 DT: 8/11/13@8:47"
"08/11 09:45:43","Affiliate",4011,"T: 102 DT: 8/11/16@1:51",600,"TG: 4011 DT: 8/11/13@8:47"
"08/11 10:01:59","Affiliate",4002,"T: 102 DT: 8/11/16@1:22",2820,"TG: 4002 DT: 8/11/13@10:01"
"08/11 10:05:22","Affiliate",4011,"T: 102 DT: 8/11/16@1:51",600,"TG: 4011 DT: 8/11/13@8:47"
"08/11 10:10:14","Affiliate",4011,"T: 102 DT: 8/11/16@1:51",690,"TG: 4011 DT: 8/11/13@9:06"
"08/11 10:11:27","Affiliate",4011,"T: 102 DT: 8/11/16@1:51",600,"TG: 4011 DT: 8/11/13@8:47"

Where is each line is transmission.

RX Only = No TX. No TX = No affilation. No affilation = No RX unmute.

This is from what I know.

Well what you know is apparently wrong because I'm listening to numerous P25 systems on a XTL5000 and XTS5000 and I don't affiliate to the system. While I'm not going to get into how that is done on a public forum, it can be done. My question was geared towards Kenwood equipment. As I posted, I was unable to program the 5x20 series to do this.

N3AAG, PLEASE STOP POSTING. You lose credibility everytime you post as they are outlandish and complete off base of what the thread is talking about.

Signal Zero, what I am hoping is that Kenwood can install or already does have a feature similar to the older firmware Harris radios, Bendix king radios and even the unication pager where the radio will "scan/monitor" a trunked radio system without affiliating, but being able to monitor as would a trunking radio unlike the Moto non affiliate method.

Evans, I don't think it is a useless feature. I know plenty of departments that use scanners to monitor systems they are not privey too for whatever reason but have them so that they can get a jump on things or know what's going on in other jurisdictions. This is due to radio company competition where it's not all uniform throughout an area and they don't have to talk to the other agency over their system, but feels it's good to have ears on things.

Except that method is completely useless for monitoring TDMA talkgroups on P25 Phase II systems, and you won't hear a thing. The radio must decode the control channel in order to know which TDMA slot to decode on the voice channel. P25 Phase II TDMA is trunking-only, not conventional.

Also, most of the rest of the stuff you've posted is nonsense, but others have already covered that.

Right here...
NX5700/5800 with KCH19

I am waiting on my 5800 deck to get here and I have all the parts to set up the dual but I have a question. When you set up dual decks and set up a soft key to switch between decks,is there a way to set up a scan across both decks? I had 790/890 set up and you programmed it like one radio and scan so forth, but the NX series treats it like two radios and one head so I have not seen how to make it scan VHF/UHF in the same list. I know I can move up to the KCH20 and have both on the screen and have each scan but I like the KCH19 with its front speaker.

Does not work that way. You Press scan for each deck, and use kes 3 for your speakers.
As you know I have the 20 head, and three decks.
I've put in a request to fabricate a hhch that is like the portable, so we shall see about that dream.

Sorry on the road, short answer response, there is no one single scan list for all two or three decks.

Folks, let's get back on topic. If you have questions, issues, or experiences with the Kenwood NX-5000 series of radios, please post. Other radios or other manufacturer's radios are off topic for this thread.

Also, if you have a problem with another poster or with specific posts, please use the Report Post feature to alert the moderators and let them deal with it. Towards the right side of the dark gray bar above each post, you'll find a red-bordered triangle. That's the Report Post button.

So, just gonna toss this one out there....

Last year at IWCE I was talking to the Kenwood guys. I asked them if they had plans for a higher powered RF deck then the current 50 watt models.
"we're working on it". was the reply.

Talking to the factory rep yesterday about the TK-x90 EOL, I asked him if he'd heard any more on this. He said we might hear something at IWCE this year, that they were probably going to roll out a higher power RF deck model for these radios.

Now, I don't need more than 50 watts, but I know some people like to have the biggest one on the block, so maybe this might appeal to others.
Seems like it would be a good path to take the product line. DMR, P25, NXDN, Analog, up to 100 watts (?), multi deck, multi head, seems like that would put Kenwood out in front for a while.

As for the TK-x90 retirements, living in California I had to ask about the CHP low band radios. He said that at this stage in the game, it's cheap and easy to keep building the low band VHF radios, so the TK-690 will remain on the market. Since Kenwood has the only large low band radio on the market, they really can just keep building the analog low band radios and keep CHP and the others happy.

Be nice if they ever rolled a low band NX-5600 RF deck.

I guess in March we'll find out.

The problem with trying to maintain production of an older model, as I'm sure you know, is availability of parts. If there is anything unique in the parts list of the TK-690, those parts becoming unavailable might force a re-design to accommodate the new parts. My guess is that Kenwood would not re-design the TK-690 and would, instead, find a way to adapt their current platforms to the market.

Maybe we should hope for some part in the TK-690 to become unobtainium. ;)

Probably the likely scenario. Last year at IWCE, they also said they were "considering" a Low VHF model, so I'm sure it's in the works.

With the CHP having thousands of these, I'm sure they are not in a hurry to replace them. Even if Kenwood cranks out a few hundred and just sells them until gone, that's still probably a few years.

The amateur radio guy inside of me really wants a 6m, 2m, 70cm multimode radio like this.
Reality is I'll probably just run my old CDM1550 into the ground.
