• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Correct.

The bigger head is really nice for multi-deck but isn't essential.

Awesome - you saved me guessing and buying the advanced control head. I agree, it's nice but overkill for my application. I found the "Unselected Speaker Offset" selection in the file. I'll have to play around with -3dB and -9dB to see which works best. Do you happen to know if I can program one of the keys to mute the unselected audio, as well? It might be nice if I could mute the unselected audio from the control head in the event I wanted to focus on traffic from the selected deck, especially if the unselected deck was scanning. I found a menu item called "Unselected RF Deck Speaker"... curious if that could be used for this application?

With the advanced head that does mute the unselected speaker. Not 100% sure with standard head.

I've added that as a secondary function to the Aux key. I had to take the decks out of my truck as I'm in the midst of installing new secondary battery/charging system, so I can't test the new setting file until I get the radios reinstalled. Thanks!

You can set the Unselected Deck Offset and the Unselected RF Deck Speaker Mute as Menu Items, and the Unselected RF Deck as a button press. It doesn't matter which head you have.

I honestly don't know how the EFJ clients handle four decks at once, I can't stand three.

I'd suggest checking prior to commenting in that case. You may be thinking of MOTOTRBO where it's a button press and I program on any customer that has voice announcements. I don't do a lot of Kenwood voice announcements because there's no succinct way to toggle them on and off without disabling other features like Remington12G mentioned...

Additionally, Kenwood's voice announcements take priority over RX audio, meaning users changing channels will have (potentially important) traffic cut off. There's no way to change that, unlike TRBO.

Individual Deck mute would be another great feature (that has been requested before) not implemented. We have incidents where guys will need the VHF and UHF but not the 700/800 in their radio. Right now we only have unselected deck mute which disables everything but the selected RF Deck.

Don't get me wrong, I do like these radios, I have 3 portables and 4 multi-deck multi-head configurations. However, there's a lot of room for improvement.

I wanted them some times and not others so i just made a zone with and a zone without

It is not difficult at all once you get use to it.
Kind of like working at a dispatch center.

True, but a dispatch console will have multiple volume settings--a master select and a master unselect and then independent volume controls on a per line basis.

Of the bazillion scanners listed in your profile, I don't see any NX5k mobiles?

So I'm curious how the volume works with, say, two decks and the deluxe head? I know there is a dedicated volume knob on the deluxe head...does it just adjust the selected deck or both at the same time or what?

It adjusts all decks at the same time to the same level (unless you have Unselected Deck offset enabled, but even then all decks are tied to the volume knob).

It gets more complicated with dual heads and then you get into which control head controls the audio from the deck speakers and which just handles audio from it's own amp.

I'm sorry if this question has been answered and I missed it in my search. Anyway, I have an KCH-19M, NX5700, and NX5800 setup in the "Dual Deck, Single Head, Remote Mount" configuration. I also have speakers (KES-3) plugged into each RF deck. I've found that the "select" audio passes via the KCH-19M and the "unselect" audio passes via the RF deck speakers, which is perfect. However, there doesn't appear to be a way to adjust the volume level for each deck separately. Is there a setting I can change/program in "Key Assignments" or the "Optional Settings" fields of KPG-D1N that would allow me to have separate volume control for each deck?

If not, is this problem solved if I upgrade to the KCH-20RM control head? I use this setup has a ham rig, so I want to make sure the more expensive control head will work before I purchase it.

Thanks,
Trace-W6HMS

There is no separate volume settings per deck. the unselect volume can be adjusted to -9, -6,-3, or 0 with a hot button (put it in your menu)

Has anyone else who uses the audio recording feature noticed SD card corruption issues after a while? I find after a few months I start getting "SD CARD ERROR" on screen and have to re-format the SD card in order for recording to work again.

The cards are typically still perfectly readable in a computer, but the radio stops liking them and won't continue recording until a format. I'm going to switch over to an A1-rated card to see if that makes any difference.

This is on an NX57/5800 combo setup on FW 4.32
