The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am saving for a new radio, deciding between an NX3300 or NX5300 (leaning towards the NX5300), but I was curious if the NX5300 does custom voice announcements like Motorola APX radios? It wouldn't make or break the radio but I was curious.

Yes, both the 3k and 5k series allow for customized voice announcements. I have a couple of NX-3320-K models that don't have displays or any front panel PF-keys. So, using the KPG-D3N(W) software and a mic attached to my PC, I made customized labels for functions, zone names and channel names. Every time I switch a zone or channel an announcement in my own voice lets me know what zone/channel I'm on. It takes some time to set it up, but in the end it's pretty slick.

That's pretty cool, so it will say the channel name such as 'Fire Ops'?
There is a sequence to follow to set up the software for "User Programmable" announcements, but you can make them anything you want. I forget the limit on voice clip length, but I never hit the limit.

Two very different radios. I've got most of the Kenwood product line running at work in one form or another.

Unless you need P25, or need to run two digital modes at the same time, the NX-3000 line are a really nice product. I've got a bunch of them running, NX-3400's on trunked system, and NX-3300's on a conventional analog UHF system. I've got a few NX-5400's, also.
NX-1300 isn't a bad radio if your budget is tight and need something basic.
There is a big cost difference, also.

I already have a 1300 which I love, along with a 210 and I like having the buttons on the speaker mic as well as a lot of other things. I would like to have 2 digital modes at the same time as my county is going nxdn but my town is dmr. Every public safety agency around me with the exception of volunteer fds (they're phasing out tk3180s), uses NX5300s so I don't doubt they're bad

Good choice, then.
I've got a few hundred NX-410's that I've been running since 2011. I can count on one hand the number of radios that have failed in 12 years.

That's really good to hear, channel knob on my 210 is sloppy in some places but that's the only problem I have with it, it was a railroad radio so I expected it to be beat up when I bought it
