To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a truck with the NX5700 dual heads. One was bad, so I put a new one on, same model. The firmware needed updating, so I was starting that process when the radio powered down. The truck was not running when it happened, so I don't know if the radio turned off because of that, or something else. Now, I can't power the remote head units at all, even if I swap back to the original. I have power on ignition sense and the +12v lines. Any help would be appreciated.

Try taking off the ignition sense. I only run my'n without it and when power is introduced they come on, and when I leave the car I just have to turn them off.

You first mistake was updating the firmware with the vehicle off. It's highly likely that you just bricked the whole radio. Anytime you are writing to the radio codeplug, or especially firmware and lose power to the radio mid-process, is a very, very bad thing. This could prove to be a costly lesson, I doubt there anything you can do at this point except to send it in for repair.

Sounds like a trip to New York or California is in order repair centers is in order or your setup. I have had better luck sending to California as far a turnaround time. ALAWAYS make sure to update radios with a stable power source, or vehicle turned on. Firmware upgrades are literally telling the radio how to perform, so a loss of power during a write leaves the radio without the info it needs to operate. This is also true with your laptop, I almost always get my laptop plugged into power during a process like this.

I wasn't actually writing. To clarify, I had the software, KPG-D1SL downloaded, and I tried to write, but I would get an error about the com port. Additionally, after talking to another tech, he told me that I needed to download the firmware .zip file, and load that onto the software to write, so I hadn't done any of that. When I put the new head on, dip swith #4 was in the on position, but after looking at the old one, i moved the switch to off. I was attempting to write (incorrectly) when the unit powered down. I disconnected all plugs from both units this morning, and turned battery switch to off, plugged everything back in and powered truck on, no change.

So you are taking a single head radio (that was working) and adding another head to make it a dual. Is that correct?

Or you are replacing a single remote head that the original is perceived bad? You are not being very clear here.

Sorry, it is a dual head unit, with one head being bad. Oddly enough, I found a bad fuse, and replaced it, and the head works now. The weird part is I had voltage to the transceiver.
