Anyone here use an actual NXDN portable for railroad monitoring? I was looking at the Kenwood 220, but curious as to where to get programming software, and is it as much a PITA to program as a Motorola. Thanks

Hello,

I use a Icom IC-F3261DT portable for both Ham NXDN and Railroad monitoring. It has Railroad Firmware, which adds some nice features over the stock firmware. A railroad version of the programing software is required and it is not too difficult to get. The program software is setup different than Motorola, but it did not seem to difficult.

I have one zone setup with all the AAR channels in dual analog/digital mode. I also have a scan list setup to scan all the channels. I also have a zone with all the local RR frequencies. One of the yards use MDC1200 signalling and I was able to setup decoding.

I've got somewhere north of 400 Kenwood NXDN radios, every single last one of them programmed by me.

I've also done a lot of Motorola programming.

The Kenwood software is, by far, easier to use. Good help documentation for most features. Well laid out. If you've used Motorola programming software, you'll likely have no issues with Kenwood software.

I just started playing with NXDN have to fix an issue with a small shortline here. The software is not bad and very easy to find. the only thing i have found is you need 4 different CPS types for radios. One nice thing about motorola is the XPR line is one CPS for everything

the Nx-700 does not stand up well in a steam locomotive also buttons are kinda of small

That's one of the failings of the Kenwood product line, although now that Kenwood and EFJ are one big happy family I keep hearing that Kenwood products are going to start using the Armada software from EFJ; supposedly all products from both lines will use Armada.

I'll believe it when I see it (and wish they would hurry).
