NY Area HF Frequencies

I just got a ATS 909....i've been playing around with it for about 6 hours, cant hear much...I got it to listen to mostly ham activity. Are there any frequencies to start with in the metro NY area?

I may have a reception problem in my room due to the insulation on the house. I got a 10 meter radioshack rig several years ago, and never had much luck hearing anything with a 10meter dipole strung across my ceiling on the 2nd floor.

I may have to hang the ATS 909 wire antenna out the window, or go out in the yard.

I also got a radioshack swl antenna kit, but from what i hear, this will overload the radio.

In the meantime, I am listening to some good old medium wave am.

Right now the sun is throwing fits; several solar flares have come our way in the last few days, and has really caused the geomagnetic field to become unstable insofar as HF propagation is concerned. So fear not, it's not the radio.

What are your interests? There's so much to hear that it's difficult to recommend anything until folks know at least that.

The RS SWL antenna shouldn't overload the radio. ARINC has a NY facility that communicates by HF with airliners flying between NY and Europe (also the Caribbean.) ARINC NY freqs I know of are: 2887, 2962, 3016, 3455, 5520, 5550, 5598, 6577, 6586, 6622, 6628, 6640, 8825, 8846, 8906, 8918, 11309, 11330, 11396, 13297, 13306, 13330, 13354, 17907, 17946, 17952, 21964. Many of these are also used by ARINC Gander and Shanwick. All freqs won't be busy at all times of course.

If you've never experienced HF listening before, then there are some basic things to keep in mind.

What you hear on what frequencies depends on the time of day.

HF is mainly used for fairly long-distance communications. You won't hear much "local" traffic down there.
