The apx8000 works well for me here on LI. I can still pick up the city frequencies with out an issue .
Definitely blew my wad on the radio but I'm definitely not going back .
Never thought of adding the mta. Since I grew up in queens I spent a lot of my time on the subway i would love to listen in now . Thanks for the new channels to be programmed in . [emoji13]

I love the color of the 8000! I don't often listen to MTA but I do sometimes listen to the routine traffic. A lot of the voice traffic is done over 6 wire but you'll hear regular traffic. I just sold my xts5000 uhf and I don't think I will ever go back to another radio. I love the way it feels and operates. And the RSM has amazing sound quality.

Very true . I had an old xts3000 so I missed out on most of the uhf 2 frequencies. When this came up I was like I have to have it . Now pretty much all the frequencies I used to listen to in Nassau went p25 phase 2 so now I just scans of the city . The grip on this radio makes you feel more comfortable with holding it . My xts never gave me that feeling . Do you have fpp ? I have the cable so I can do more in depth programs but the fpp on this is great on the fly . I was in Florida and was trying to figure out why so many sirens . Few minutes later and I found it was a working house fire .
All and all . If i had to do it again . I'd purchase it hands down .

Non affilaition scan, if done properly, will never allow your radio to transmit, I've done it on both an APX & XTS and it is far superior to trunk tracking with a scanner.

I don't want my radio affiliating with the system and it getting bricked.

I'm still trying to learn the program with no name . I don't want to brick the radio as well . I know they have a learning curve and I'd rather make sure that I know more about what I'm doing then just say let's try this . I'm definitely willing to try . Just want to give it time

Sorry, apparently Photobucket doesn't allow third-party hosting anymore. Hopefully the image displays this time...

Very nice. I caught the same flack when I started using a Harris XG-100P Unity handheld for amateur radio as well. People said, why such an expensive radio? They just work better.

Thank you for sharing the pictures, enjoy the railway radio traffic.

That's so awesome! I'd love to be in the cab!

Definitely a fun experience! This was an express running N/B out of GCT to Croton Harmon. Here's another one just south of the Tappan Zee.

I take the metro north 3-4 times a month on the new haven line. I'd love to be in the cab while in operation

I monitor the subways and rails as a hobby and go down to Park Ave and 97th st to watch the rail traffic and listen to metro north, Amtrak and the NYC subway system. I usually set up a nice spot and get a coffee and relax. I use my Motorola APX 7000 VHF/UHF and a cannon T3i:

Do you listen to PD/FD audio out loud? I can only imagine the looks you might get from passerby's. I always listen with earphones but I use a yaesu vx-8dr to listen.

I only listen with Bluetooth headphones if I'm in the city itself, like midtown or surrounding areas. I don't wanna be stopped and have my APX taken. Otherwise if I'm hiking I use the RSM and keep it low enough that only I can hear it.

Haha smart move man, I remember a member here had his radio taken away in Williamsburg after being stopped by the police. He was listening to 90 PCT while being in the 90 PCT and officers stopped him and confiscated his radio. They said it violated homeland security or something, honestly something I never heard of. But it's never a good idea to listen to a radio/scanner out loud in public. Especially in NYC where people will stop if they think you're a cop and seek some sort help or information.

I remember that. I don't ever even let people know I have my radio on me. When I took these railfan photos I had a Bluetooth ear piece in. They NYPD says it's illegal to park on 1 channel consistently, and I am not one to argue. Besides I'd rather do my monitoring privately and avoid any questions and misidentification. I'm just a guy who loves to scan. I live in the 30 pct so it's a little easier to walk around and get photos and monitor as long as I do it privately. And I have lived in NYC for close to 20 years now and avoid Times Square like the plague. Especially 34th st. I stay away from 59th street - 14th street. It's just to touristy for me [emoji23]

In NY state, it is unlawful for most people to have police-capable receivers in their cars without a permit.

So glad i dont live in a place with laws like that.

About 10+ years ago when i worked at a radio shop and was doing some volunteer FF i heard a nasty wreck near me, heard them call for a medical helo, heard medical helo try to talk to them on their FD channel with no luck. Helo was about to abort since their protocol requires ground contact. I got on my radio and told the medical helo who i was (luckily my radio shop had done programming for them in the past) and then called the FD back dispatch line and told them i could be on scene in minutes with a working radio to the helo, Dispatcher asked the battalion chief if they still wanted the helo and a member of a voly dept had contact with them and was a few minutes out, they said yes, i arrived got in touch with BC and landed helo..
Got some interesting looks and a big thank you from the BC and later worked with them to make sure the helo and others had the correct info. I had to give up the volunteer FF stuff due to work but im glad i took the time to stop and listen.

I think this more of NYC thing then any other place in the state. I don't understand why it's illegal to stay parked on one channel, and yea listening to a ps scanner out loud is stupid but should it warrant a confiscation and a desk appearance ticket, just really doesn't make sense. I think a ham here got pulled over by the cops in the city and they were flipping channels on his yaesu radio.

That right there is the main reason all of my radios have locks. Power on and enter the passcode.
The secondary by product of me locking my radios is if they get stolen the crooks wont have access to what i have programmed and cant listen.

But yeah if a cop wants to see my radios he can. But i wont give him the passcode.
