I may be reading too much into this, but it sounds like they are getting new radios not a new system. It appears as if these radios will be multiband, multimode so that they can talk on any frequency and mode.

Personally I think this is the right idea. I always found it insulting that agencies spend millions if not billions on complex radio systems in the name of "interoperability" when I felt all they really needed was a better radio that could access the existing systems, even if they were different.

But then again, maybe I am just reading into it because it makes sense.

I sure hope so. If I had to go without Melsgarage or The Bravest, it would seriously cramp my style!

While the article from last week indicates that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will be testing these multiband radios in NYC, it does not say that they are going to be used by NYPD or FDNY. Yes, the article states that the radios were designed for "first responders", but it really sounds like the various agencies of DHS will be testing them for their own purposes. This means being used on VHF (162-174) and UHF (406-420). Let's see how this develops.

They should be deploying a handful of Harris radios and or Thales Libertys to people within the FDNY/NYPD for use on the street. I am not sure of the exact paramaters in which they will be deployed operationally, but they will be on the street in some form. DHS is picking up the tab on this one.

As you note, the article doesn't mention New York City, NYPD, or FDNY. All it says is that DHS will be testing some prototype multiband, mulimode, radios. It doesn't even say if they are portable or mobile radios or who the manufacturer is.

Awfully thin cloth from which to speculate the New York City is getting a whole new radio system.

Especially when you consider that DOITT is throwing 35.5 million dollars into the channel 16 project that's still under construction.

I asked around and confirmed that NYC will be testing the Thales Liberty through SAFECOM, I don't know exaclty which departments, but it would be safe to assume one or both, NYPD/NYFD

Really? Because I've read that is a $75 million contract. And they've been talking about it for years and still isn't done.

It may be a $75M contract. The source I was reading dealt only with fiscal 2008.
