Can someone tell me what NYPD unit U-5 is? It sounds as if it should be an Emergency Service Division supervisor. Am I right? Also, is Air-Sea xx today's version of the old Aviation x, which was a helicopter?

Tnx,

U-5 is the Emergency Service Commander for Brooklyn and Queens. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Mike.

I realized last night that "U" is just an abbreviated "ESU," so I assume that U4 is the ESU boss for Manhattan/Bronx, or something like that, and there's another "U" for Staten Island?

When Aviation ## is up doing a mission for air/sea rescue, can be be descibed over the air as "Air/Sea ##"

I rarely hear aviation units being referred to as Air ##. They (and central) identify helos as Aviation ##, nothing else

There is always a NYPD diver on duty at aviation, when there is a diver in the ship it is referred to as air sea rescue.

They will also always send a boat to any water rescue job with the air ship. If they do drop a diver, they immediately notify central, any responding boat, Harbor OS, and FDNY. They only have the ability to drop the diver, they must be recovered with a boat.

They provide some of the best service to the citizens of NYC, how many other cities have these resources.
