Interoperability with counties using 800 MHz trunking would also be a good reason to add 800 MHz antennae to trooper cars.

They haven't done it in Troop G that I can tell. NYSP talks to Saratoga County units via patch to the P25 system. No SP units are actually "on" the system.

The cars/suvs that have the 800 antennas i have seen must have been reprogrammed or a new radio. There the only ones with Post Ge star id, i peeked in one of the cars and there's still only one radio visible. and it looked like the GE's they have been using. i haven't seen the new portables around here yet. One member has his own GP300 he said " i don't need to it works fine" i said till the end of the year maybe....he wasn't amused....he'll figure it out in time

The 800mhz antenna is for the in car repeater for the APX Portables. They have a few in service in my area and all troopers are carrying the APX VHF/700/800

I just copied two NYSP cars enroute to a call, and the first cruiser in said that he would turn on his repeater when he reached the scene. (the plot thickens).
I had all of the probable frequencies for the repeater in, but they weren't close enough to me I guess.

I have several outdoor antennas and they all have low noise amplifiers right at the base of the antennas.
Even with all that, the repeaters are noisy from 1/2 mile or so away from me.
