I have seen some troopers now carrying the Motorola APX dual band portables. About time they are doing away with the GEs, now they just have to work on the mobiles...
for some reason i have always wanted one of those GE Orions for my car... Dont kn ow why.
I have one on flea bay now....not narrow band equipt....
I saw that. Home of Rip Van Winkle, right...
The Harris M7100 VHF radios are replacing the older GE Orion VHF mobiles and as far as I know of, there are no plans to replace or remove them.
The Motorola APX portables are dual band VHF/800 MHz with P25 capabilities.
The 800 MHz. antennas on the units are for vehicular repeaters.
And yes, SP has also purchased some Harris Unity Portable radios. They are similar to the APX's but also inclue the UHF band.
At some point next year, Harris should be releasing the mobile version of the Unity radio, also VHF/UHF/700-800 with P25 capabilities. Unknown if SP would purchase these radios. Guess it would depend if NYSP continues with their contract with Harris.
So the troopers won't be using VHF from the portables at all then - it will only be 800 to the vehicular repeater, correct?
Wow. The techs are going to have a fun time supporting that!
