I have seen some troopers now carrying the Motorola APX dual band portables. About time they are doing away with the GEs, now they just have to work on the mobiles...

Interesting. All the NYSP troopers I saw this summer still had the old GE radios. I guess they are rolling out the new ones starting with the capital region and working their way out.

Probably right. I am in G territory so probably starting around here. I do see some Troop G cars without the Antenna Specialist VHF antenna so maybe new mobiles too, unless they are using different VHFs...

The Harris M7100 VHF radios are replacing the older GE Orion VHF mobiles and as far as I know of, there are no plans to replace or remove them.

The Motorola APX portables are dual band VHF/800 MHz with P25 capabilities.

The 800 MHz. antennas on the units are for vehicular repeaters.

And yes, SP has also purchased some Harris Unity Portable radios. They are similar to the APX's but also inclue the UHF band.

At some point next year, Harris should be releasing the mobile version of the Unity radio, also VHF/UHF/700-800 with P25 capabilities. Unknown if SP would purchase these radios. Guess it would depend if NYSP continues with their contract with Harris.

So is it a correct assumption that the 800 Mhz antennas that are turning up on their cruisers are for vehicular repeaters ?

I would imagine that NYSP and New York State in general will stay with Harris. Like GE they are one of the largest employers in NY. At least that's what I have been told over the years as to why Motorola may get some bids, but the majority will go to Harris/GE, and it also appears that Harris is keeping with the same structure for awarding contracts to it's local vendors. I suspect NY is trying out all the vendor radios before they attempt another statewide system.
Here at my job we are changing out the older Orion radios with M7100 series, we got 113 of the last 140 or so M-7100's being built, we aren't even taking out the heads or accessories, just exchanging the trunk packs.

Most if not all VHF Orions are narrow compliant at least as far as the FCC is concerned. There are mixtures of non-compliant, partially compliant and fully compliant. With our radios those made in 1995 are FCC compliant and will do narrow band transmit with a firmware upgrade, but not narrow receive. That is easily corrected with putting in narrow filters. I did some testing to see how it would work, and the radio performed very close to a true narrow band receiver. The models we have are suffixed as G3, compliant, and after firmware upgrade will be TX only with no 2.5 kc spacing, G7 compliant, and after firmware upgrade TX only with 2.5 kc channel spacing, and CX fully compliant 2.5 kc channel spacing for both TX and RX on a per channel basis
I suspect most of the NYSP radios fall in the either non-compliant or partially compliant catagory, since they have had them so long.
I equate the Orion to the Spectra line, good solid radios that very seldom break. Most of our compliants were after the radio got wet when the engineer or conductor of the train left the window open going through the train wash.

ok... let's make some sense of this mess!!!

Mobiles - the stalwart Harris M7100. replacing the old Orions which sadly NYS didn't buy the right ones to narrowband as radioman2001 alludes to. in most, but maybe not all, troops this is being done now. if you do spy a troop car and it looks like an antenna farm, remember that there are now going to be anywhere from 2 to 3 radios in those things, plus the cell/GPS antenna.
Vehicular Repeaters - attached to those shiny new M7100's will be Pyramid units to take the tuned M7100 channel and repeat it through the 800 MHz portion of whichever portable (see below) was issued to Trooper. this is the down and dirty way of extending the radio network in an effort to better provide officer safety.
Portables - ah, the mess. some Troopers will receive the Harris Unity XG-100 and others will receive the Moto APX 7000. those Troops that have a county radio system requiring Moto radios will be getting those neat APX radios. Everyone else, the XG. Though, depending on the flavor of the county (VHF, UHF, etc) will decide on which version of the APX (VHF/800 or UHF/800) to be issued. Most of those who have used the Unity radio do not like it and would prefer the APX. the 800 MHz (and yes, I know they both do 700 MHz too) band will become the "de facto" detail "zone" when it comes to events such as the State Fair.

I'm quite confident that the SP will keep Harris as the primary radio vendor for years to come. Motorola only made an appearance at this party to support those county radio systems that need their special options.

look for the SP to narrowband within the upcoming year.

So the troopers won't be using VHF from the portables at all then - it will only be 800 to the vehicular repeater, correct?

Wow. The techs are going to have a fun time supporting that! :)

The portables will be VHF/800 from what they are saying. The APX and unity portable are dual band radios they come in a mixture of flavors.

all I see at work are the old Orions on pallets to be shipped back to Scotia.

Troopers will be able to use the VHF portion of the portable radio as they still do today. but in those fringe reception areas where the portable just doesn't cut it, they can switch over to the vehicle repeater to talk out on the car instead.
