Three years from now, about $56 million worth of upgrades will have been made to Oakland County's public safety radio communications system.
The system, which is run by the county on behalf of local law enforcement, EMS, hospitals, and other public safety users, is utilizing 17-year-old equipment that's worn out and past its lifecycle with many of the replacement parts being out of production. .
The new radio system, the ASTRO 25 land-mobile radio (LMR) network, will connect with the statewide Michigan Public Safety Communication System (MPSCS). The county is seeking to enter into a limited partnership with the MPSCS, which would more than double the number of users on one system.
