Opens lines of communication for emergencies
PONTIAC, Mich. -- Oakland County is rolling out a new multimillion-dollar digital emergency radio system that will allow dispatchers, police, fire and other emergency workers across the county to do something they've never been able to do before: communicate directly with each other by radio.
Typically, under the old system, emergency workers in one city could communicate with workers in another city only through their dispatch operators. The new system also allows Oakland County emergency officials to communicate with agencies outside the county on other digital radio systems, including Michigan State Police, and some communities in Macomb County, Detroit and the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
