Does anyone have any information on the numbering systems that Ocean City and Worcester County use for identifying their fire stations and apparatus? I visit Ocean City several times a year and I've never been able to discern a pattern. Thanks!

Thanks, guys. Mike, as usual I didn't check the wiki before posting, I'm a dummy! Pasadena, thanks, I did see the info on the OC FD website. I know have more info than I had before, anyway! Still can't figure out the "pattern" (? if there is one!?) to the OC units... the station #s in the Worcester wiki are some help, but there are some units that defy identification... I'll have to jot those down and start a list. If I can ever cull this all together, will write something for the wiki.

Doug

What pattern are you trying to figure out?

Just a hint Worcester announces the station names not numbers when dispatching fire calls.

What pattern are you trying to figure out?
For example, here is a list that I cut and pasted from the wiki that Mike mentioned above:

* HQ - Engines 3,16, Rescue7, Tower 5, Utility 10, Brush 15, Marine 1
* Special Hazards 21, Canteen 25 Medic 1 and 11
* Station 2 - Engine 9, Medic 2
* Station 3 - Engine 4, Tower 6, Rescue 18, Medic 3 and 31
* Station 4 - Engine 12 Medic 4
* Station 5 - Engines 1,2 Tankers 19,20 Air Unit 13 Utility 80, Marine 2 and Snorkel 11
* Station 6 - Possibly not in use anymore

Why is Engine 9 at Station 2, Engine 4 at Station 3, Engine 12 at Station 4, and Engines 1 & 2 at Station 5?

Why Tankers 19 and 20? What happened to Tankers 1 - 18? What happened to all the Utilities between 10 and 80?

etc, etc.

Doesn't make any sense... what is the numbering system? And I don't think these are their radio designations, but not sure about that. In Montgomery County, when I hear Engine 734, I know it lives at Station 34, etc. Or before the Grande Change, if I heard Engine 171, I knew it was from Station 17.

Incidentally, I think the Medics are now called "Paramedic" whatever...

Ocean City does not number there units to match the stations like Montgomery County. Which in my personal opinion the new numbering system sucks.

The medic units are numbered to match the stations. Paramedic 1 at headquarters, Paramedic 2 at station 2 and so on. If there are 2 medic units at one station they would be Paramedic 1-1, Paramedic 2-1 and so on.

I'm guessing they just number the units in the order they were put in service. Engine 4 is at station 4 right now and I don't know where they moved Engine 12 to. Engine 16 is at station 3.

Station 5 has been torn down and there is a new station being built now. So they have moved the equipment around.

When they are responding in Ocean City the unit numbers are Engine 1, Engine 2 and so on. When the units respond in the county they are Engine 701, Engine 702 and so on.

Thanks, every little bit of info helps. Seems to me, tho, that with no "system", it might be difficult to keep track of things, esp for a dispatcher or firefighter who is new.

BTW, I actually want to put together the same info for the FDs in Sussex Co, DE; haven't gone looking yet but anything you have would be helpful... PM me if you want to. Thx!

There is not much difference in Sussex. For example I live in the Roaxana area, They have Engine 90-1 at there sub station and Engine 90-4 and 90-5 at there headquarters. The sub stations are not much more than a pole barn. As with Montgomery, say Gaithersburg, you have Station 8 and Station 28. In Roxana you have Company 90 station 1 and station 2.
If you get a house fire in Sussex it's what ever who ever gets on the road goes. In Montgomery you have 5 Engines, 2 Trucks, a Squad, a ambulance. In Sussex they count a body as staffing. The Engine might go out the door with 6 people, 4 of those could be cadets/juniors but they are counted as staffing even if they can't do interior firefighting. On a house fire you will hear 3 company's get toned out. You might end up with 7 engines 3 trucks 3 squads and what ever else goes out the door. Funny thing is you hear an auto accident get toned out and you will hear everything but an amulance go out the door and then you will finally hear an ambulance go.

Below are links to stations in Sussex. You can go to there links and check out more stations.

Doug it is the same way in other Counties as well you are just used to the way Montgomery County does it. I am not saying its wrong or right. You just kinda have to deal with the way it is set up. The list above is not correct anymore. When I was there the other night for a Duty Night, all the equipment at Station 1 was different than what is listed above and may change again here in the future.

As far as Worcester County apparatus numbering, apparatus numbers are based on the station number. For example, Berlin Fire Department is Station 600. Their ambulance/paramedic units are 600-Paramedic-1, 600-Paramedic-2, and 600-Paramedic-3 unless the unit is staffed at the BLS level, then it would be 600-A-1, and so on. For engines, they are numbered 601, 602, 603, etc. As someone else mentioned, Worcester dispatches departments by name over the radio.

Ocean City Fire Department is part of Worcester's numbering system as Station 700. As someone mentioned, when operating in Ocean City, they use their own numbering system. When they respond into the county, they sometimes use the 700 prefix like above.
