If you're in Freehold, you may not be able to pick up Ocean County.

You may not be able to hear Old bridge either. Its not a very strong signal.

Hi all,

"I realize its in a different direction but I can recieve Ocean County TRS north of Trenton more often than not."

Unless they moved the state capitol it's nowhere near Ocean County, in fact it's clear across the state from SOC. The county transmitter site is in Dover Twp. near Toms River the county seat.

The OC TRS is very strong. I'm in Beachwood and can pick it up without having an antenna on my scanner. Dover Twp. is known for having excellent distance with tropospheric ducting; people in different states can hear it when the weather is right. Though Dover Twp. and the OC TRS are two different systems, I can expect them to share the same properties when it comes to tropospheric ducting.

Hi Joseph and readers,

Tropo or no you'll catch plenty of distant stations from Beachwood. Aside from what's in the shadow of Telegraph Hill and Cherry Hill in Holmdel you have an excellent shot north and can easily hear the NY/NNJ action, the Union County UHF repeater is particularlly strong and the Elizabeth FD even stronger. I have no idea why, UC is atop a mountain in Summit at the edge of the Watchung Reservation while EFD has a tower I estimate to be about 70' tall next to HQ barely above sea level. Headed south you have a clear shot but oddly enough Atlantic County is one vast dead spot while Delaware comes in like gang busters. When the band opens sometimes it's Maine to Florida and beyond, Pennsylvania being inland comes in but not nearly as strong. BTW, some of those transmitters can be heard under normal conditions, mountains make excellent towers.

Hey guys, get a ham license (the Tech exam is a snap) and you can transmit on VHF/UHF with up to 1500W. Why sit there listening to a band opening when you can work it?

Speaking about receiving distant signals, I live in Brick, and with one of my scanners hooked up to an outside roof mounted discone antenna I can pick up VHF and Low Band frequencies for PD, FD, & EMS agencies in Burlington, Essex, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, & Somerset Counties in NJ, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Westchester Counties in NY, along with the NY City VHF fire frequencies that are flame throwers (you can get them just using a scanner mounted antenna), and Northampton County Pennsylvania. They come in pretty much on a regular basis, but reception is best in the early morning (5 to 7 or 8 AM) and at night.

Ah, you get FDNY slamming-in due to cross-water propagation. That is a constant just about all year long. 3 years ago, I was at work on the road in Riverhead, LI and I was hearing Philly PD on their old 453 MHz channels out there on just my amateur HT. The next morning on the way to the jobsite, it was foggy as hell, and I was working my club's 2-meter repeater in Green Brook on 146.625 with only 25 watts!!!

The fog burned off, and the propagation disappeared by 9 AM. That was one of the best years ever for spring band-openings. I also worked Alexandria, VA on 146.520 direct from the top of the Driscoll Bridge that fall...
