I have noticed that the radios now being purchased by the county for Fire Marshals, Fire Academy, etc are XTS5000s. However, they have a bare bones analog smartzone flash.

Are there plans to eventually move the system to digital or did they simply want to get the best trunking portable out there?

If they go digital, I'll go crazy. I didn't hear anything about them going digital, but they did use DES encryption on one of the fire repeaters or 506.6375 MHz a while ago.

Motorola is not making the MTS-2000 anymore after a new year. Also where they the state fire marshals or county? State uses XTS-5000's too. They are dropping the XTS-3000 also I heard.

Correct, the XTS3000 and the MTS2000 will both be dropped relatively soon. But there are still other Motorola trunking portables out there they could have gotten for cheaper.

That what leads me to believe they were either going for reliability or are looking to upgrade to digital sometime in the future. Afterall, a $700 flash upgrade is better than replacing an entire portable.

This is the county I am referring to.

Correct but if they received a grant for the radios, could be possible for that specific model.

Ocean County Fire is not going digital, but I can't say the same for the prosecutors office. The 506.7375 FQ that Joseph11 was referring to is used primarily by the prosecutors office and yes, they do scrambe it sometimes. Not sure, but I beleive it is an APCO system.

On the Fordyce.org message board, I posted some information about this. County is doing digital testing on 506.6375 MHz. Encrypted and unencrypted APCO-25.

interoperablity?

 Has any one thought of interoperablity? With the large number of departments that are digital and/or are in the process of going digital, it makes sense to me. Take Manchester for example they are getting the infrastructure in place for a digital trs.....

just my 2 cents :)

Even analog XTS5000's still come with the astro sticker on the bottom.
