ocn29rsc, Question about the Horry County TRS

I have a question, since you live and work down there.

I was in the area this past weekend and while scanning the Horry County TRS I noticed several places up and down Business 17 (mostly from 21st Ave N, south to the county line) that the signal was really weak. I am using a Radio Shack PRO-2066 Mobile with a fender mounted Antenna Specialist MON33 on a Chevy Tahoe.

I had a BC250D with me and it seemed to do well, even when the mobile would completely lose the control channel.

Usually my mobile set up does well. I have had no problems before and here in the Winston-Salem area of NC, It does ok. I am just wondering if the area between 1st avenue, south to the county line near Murrells Inlet is a known bad area for coverage?

Up near the north end of the county from Myrtle Beach, north to the NC line it seemed that the signal was noticably better.

I also monitor the VHF dispatch side of the county fire and EMS on a Kenwood TK-780 with roof mount 1/4 wave and it was 100%, 100% of the time.....

I have noticed the same thing in the Myrtle Beach State Park area. While sitting on the pier there with both a Pro94 and a Pro96, it's hard to get a decent signal off of the control channel sometimes.

Horry County, SC

I have in my truck a BC785 scanner with a 3db gain antenna and don't seem to have alot of trouble. In fact I can sometimes hear the Horry County system when I drive to Georgetown for my shift with city FD. When I was using a regular vhf antenna I had trouble.

I use a mtx8000 b-7 to talk with for surfside and horry county and haven't had any trouble with it either. Although I have had county officers state they sometimes have trouble in the southern county areas.

Are you using a 800 MHz antenna on the BC785 or a all-band scanner antenna. Also where is it mounted?

Yes I'm using a 800 antenna 3db gain on my BC785. My antenna is located in a funny location.

If you've been on the beach and seen the beach service or lifeguard trucks with racks on them? Well thats what I drive, and on top of my rack is an extension for my lightbar and on the back of this extension I had them build me antenna brackets 1 on each side.

So I have a antenna for my VHF and one for my scanner, I also have a l bracket on the front of the truck where the hood is and had my antenna there before the extension was added and it was ok, but not the greatest.

Ihave tried all band antennas and high gain vhf antennas as well as 1/4 wave vhf's. The all band did ok, and then it broke and did better. The 1/4 wave was ok, and the high gain didn't do so well.
