I have a question regarding using an oem shoulder mic for my bcd436hp. Is it possible to just use the 3.5 mm plug from an oem mic and connect it to my scanner? I’m currently using a valor scanner blaster, and I’m not too fond of the battery. Any recommendations?

I am not familiar with the Valor scanner blaster but if it takes a battery it’s probably because it also acts as an audio amplifier. The reason for using an amplified speaker is because the BCD436HP’s external speaker jack is protected against excessive volume. It’s “dummied down” deliberately to praotect our ear drums if we use ear plugs when we forget the volume is cranked up. Any other speaker or speaker/mic you may use isn’t going to give you any amplification. But why don’t you try what you ask? Determine if the volume is sufficient... if not, you may be stuck with an amplified speaker powered by either batteries or AC.

Some mics use the 3.5mm jack for RX audio and some use it for TX audio.
It's amazing how many combinations you can get out of a few connections.

What are you trying to do? Uniden makes a CB that also includes a scanner but most scanners don’t transmit, so why the mic? Unless it’s a speaker/mic with only the speaker utilized... not sure about Motorola, if the make a speaker/mic, I’m sure they must. In which case, the speaker portion can be modified using the proper connector for the scanner if you are handy with a soldering iron. Or, possibly a local electronics store could have it done for you or know who could.

Valor Scanner Blaster mic? Is that the amplified mic with a battery? I didn’t realize it was big and bulky. But the only Motorola mic that came to mind are the ones used with mobile radios... and they are much larger than the Valor. At least that’s the impression I have. But as I mentioned, maybe Motorola makes a shoulder mic for their handi-talkies that would be much smaller. The only problem would be the loss of the amplified audio if that was the reason you got the Valor for. You’d be trading volume for physical size.

Ok. Then putting on the correct plug is what you are after. If you already have the mic you can open it up to determine which wires attach to the speaker... that’s IF the mic has both a pickup element AND a speaker. I’m not sure on this but I believe some speaker/mics use the speaker as the mic element.
