I'm getting ready to buy a BCD396T today and i just want to confirm that the BCD396T will monitor the UHF Military aircraft band right out the box?.

Yes it will. Some of the preprogrammed freqs in the National system is Mil-Air.

Also it is supposed to trunk the 380 to 400 or whatever it is that people have been asking for.

I just got my new scanner and I almost love it. I am visually impaired and I have a few small issues. Firstly, the software that can be downloaded does not disply the screen in a way that I can read. It'a graphical rather than text. Thanks to Brian Foil's "Advanced Virtual Control Software, that problem has almost disappeared. Secondly, I use the "tone alerts" to help indicate what I am listening to.. There are nine tones and all are pretty good except tone 7. It's too long and it cuts out the first part of a transmission. Otherwise, for the most part, I'm pretty happy with my new toy.

Well then, if I think that the tone is too long and someone else thinks that the tone is to short, there is a possible solution. Since there is a setting for the tone's volume, why not create a setting for the tone's length. It could be done in miliseconds: 1000 miliseconds = one (1) second.

I am just a new member and I've posted two messages both rather critical. I understand that some folks from Uniden monitor and participate in this forum. I don't mean to offend or get on somebody's wrong side so please accept these comments in the positive spirit in which they are inteded.

This is a very good idea. That would make it awesome for fire tone out as mentioned by ffexpCP.

I too use tone #7 for FTO. If you think it's too long, don't use it. 8)
Not every tone is intended to be used for every function. Some are better suited to some than others I find that tone #1 is too short and high in pitch for use for FTO and Close Call IMHO. Yet, it is well suited to channel alerts. That's why there is a choice in tones (unlike the BC246T).

Welp, I finally broke down and bought the scanner. It was killing me. I bought it from Communications Electronics Inc. and the guy I spoke to was very friendly and shipping was fast.

So far I have no regrets. The 800 MHz trunking performance is great. I realy like the cool blue backlight. The quality of the LCD contrast is very distinct and clear, similar to my Uniden corldess phone.

I haven't had any 'raspy' audio problems. Maybe I just lucked out?

The "rasp" is the battery cover vibrating while using alkalines instead of rechargables (which have a bit more girth to keep that battery door tight).

I eliminated the vibrations almost completely by putting two or three layers of black electrical tape on the battery door, right down the center on the inside. You can barely notice the tape is there and it helped a lot.

That long tone helped me the other day. I was on my way to work, rockin' out on my stereo, didn't hear my pager (speaker smushed up between my belt and seat) but the scanner alerted just fine. Any shorter and I would have missed the call.

I'm glad I didn't miss that one. Short staffed and the call was a bit of a crowd pleaser.

Perhaps Uniden can come out with tone/voice pagers. I'm sure they would work better than the last few Motorola Minitor models...

no, because it was on a channel no encryption is used....but I'll try it again. This gets old following around the local police tocheck out close call and how far away I can be so the radio can detect it. I just hope they dont catch on to what I am doing or I'll get interrogated....

That varies minute-to-minute. The signal you're trying to detect has to be a certain level above all other signals in the area. Modulation probably affects the amount, as does frequency.
