Replacing the front case involves removing 12 screws, then all

electronics, breaking the case welds then chipping the glue out from

around the speaker, then glueing it /case welding it back into a

new front case, then replacing all electronics...not a simple part swap

If the case print has worn off of your BCD396T’s front case, Uniden will replace the front case of the scanner under warranty.

From what you described, replacing JUST the front meant near destruction of the scanner (breaking and chipping were mentioned). Is Uniden JUST replacing the front? If so, I'll keep mine just the way it is with no complaints. I just wouldn't want mine fixed in that fashion. Can't see letting Uniden or anyone else "break and chip" away at my scanner, then ever wanting it back.

All that breaking and chipping would be needed only if the original speaker was to be salvaged. The speaker is not expensive and I'd bet Uniden will just put a new speaker in the new front panel and scrap the old speaker and panel. Maybe Paul can update us on the procedure.

The replacement case was assembled w/speaker at the factory. Speaker, case, and front lens are all brand new when you get it back.

I wonder if the silkscreen ink is different on the warranty replacement case. If the same thing is going to happen again with the replacement, what's the point?

That has got to be one of the most inane posts I've read in the thread.

We shall see what? THINK! Does that even make sense?

If Uniden were foolish enough to try to deceive 396 owners with that lame trick, how long would it last? In a few days the problem would resurface and everyone would be livid. Look how much weeping and wailing occurred when the problem first appeared and Uniden tried to do the right thing!

The only winner in that kind of game would be FedEx.

some people who received new replacement 396s are having the rub off problem with the replacement one as well. check the archives. uniden has not publicly declared what they will do differently.

MaXGTS's comment makes perfect sense.

why do you people insist on insulting others? how does an insult help?

Meanwhile, we should have a firmware update in a week or two that will take care of several things you have reported: PL/DPL with Fire tone-out...

Thank you kind sir for addressing this shortcoming in such a timely manner!

What I read was UPMan saying that the units exchanged were for Uniden's study, and the replacement units might still have the problem. I would expect that "What they will do differently" would be to use cases made after the problem was identified and fixed. To do otherwise would be even more inane than this continued irrational alarmism. As to not telling us exactly precisely specifically what their internal processes are...why should they? Why should we expect them to? As long as they stand behind their product (which they seem to be doing), what more should we need?

Well, not going to continue this, myself, any further. You are free to have the last word.

That's the key to this whole mess. It boils down to a warranty issue. As long as they honor that, there's nothing more that they need to do. We're not entitled to know what, why, when, or how they fixed this (or any other) problem.

Think for a moment what this situation would be like without the internet (I know... no internet, it's a ghastly thought!).

First off, the problem wouldn't have appeared so large since it wouldn't have gotten so much publicity (no internet = no RR forum or Yahoo group).

Second, the only way Uniden would have known of the problem would be if people contacted them via telephone or mail. Uniden would have absolutely no way of knowing who their users were or how to contact them otherwise.

It's funny how in the 21st century, we've grown so used to instant communication (not to mention instant gratification) that if our questions aren't answered immediately after hitting the Send button, there must be a conspiracy, or the target of our criticism must be ignoring us.

Yay!

Model:BCD396T
Serial: xxxxxxxxxxxx
POP Date:N/A
MFG Date:N/A
08/08/2005 UNIT HAS BEEN RECEIVED
Estimated Ship
Date: 08/23/2005

I can't wait to get mine back. I had to ship it back for a dead internal speaker a week or so ago. The new faceplate/speaker assembly kills 2 birds with one stone, even though I didn't have any ink problems as of the time I shipped it back.

Quoted from the packing list of one replacement unit (which happened long after Uniden's "test" units): "DEFECTIVE SILK SCREEN REPLACEMENT".

Did you receive that replacement after posting to the Silk Screen Issue Thread?
