Quick facts thus far: Radio Shack PRO-2051 Base/Mobile radio scanner made by Uniden Corporation. This unit features 1000 memory channels and
Radio Shack's new Signal Stalker (Uniden name Close Call)
technology that captures signals that are transmitted in close proximity
to your location, although the SS function is limited to ONE BAND
ONLY at a time. This unit also receives Trunked (ANALOG ONLY)
Motorola, M/A-Com EDACS, and LTR systems. Type acceptance
was received under AMWUB331 on 11/08/04 and is carried under
Radio Shack SKU #20-426. It seems this is a base/mobile version of
the PRO-97 portable that recently received type acceptance.

Actually they are improving on the 2052 with this one.. and there are HUGE areas not yet digital. They readded LTR, readded Alpha Tagging, added CTCSS/CDCSS, added the SS/CC feature. Its a proper non digital TT 3 Base/Mobile. In my opinion this will be an awesome scanner for non digital areas. If you have to have a digital scanner, grab the 2096, for non digital grab this 2051. And if you have the cash flow, get both. As for it competeing with the BC898T, this is a Uniden made for Radio Shack scanner, like the old dog 2052, but better. With this one, youll be able to trunk and conventional scan at the same time, the 2052 couldn't. Now if they keep the mil air of the 2052, itll rock for sure.

The 2052 will not do both Trunking and conventional at the sime time. I have owned 2. I owned both it and its lil bro the PRO-94 at the same time in SC.. for Mil Air and conventional I ran the 2052,.. and for trunking I ran the 94 most of the time... If thier was a magor event going on, I ran the Palmetto 800 on the 2052, and the Charleston County TRS, and Charleston City TRS on the 94. with a few conventionals on the 94 as well....

The PRO-97 is made by GRE. I don't think that the PRO-2051 is the base/mobile version of anything but itself. While I've never used a Uniden BCT-8, it seems like a close resemblance of that scanner.

I meant that as a feature comparison. I know that they are made by two different companies. I even said as much in other forums.

Sheesh, guys just because its made by another maker, does not mean it isn't a "clone". Lets go back in history a bit... IBM invents a PC,.. within a few years, everyone that can make a PC thats not Apple, makes an IBM "clone"..... Now you don't see too many actual IBM's for personal use..... but the "clones" are everywhere... (Dell, Compaq, etc,...) But if you look inside a lot of these "clones", the guts will have actual IBM parts. On the scanner side, look at every Uniden made for Uniden scanner, and most of the GRE's made for Radio Shack, look closely, you'll see they are "clones" of each other.

The PRO-83 is a clone. It's a clone of the BC92XLT. Same, but a little different. The Ford Crown Victoria and the Mercury Grand Marquee are clones. Same, but a little different. CLONE, buy definition, is supposed to be an exact copy. But it's not normally used that way.

Besides all of that, I don't recall the word "clone" coming up. He said it was the base/mobile version of the PRO-97, and I said that I think that it's not. Just like people think that the PRO-97 is a replacement for the PRO-92, which was discontinued long ago. I think it's the replacement for the PRO-95. It simply a difference of opinion, I suppose...

After reading the "temporoary manual" the features I like are:

Signal Stalker
Highway Patrol feature including the preprogrammed TRS's in use (Will come in handy for OK, SC, LA till the new 700 Digital comes online)
LTR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CTCSS/CDCSS
CC only trunking
Aplpha Tagging
CB coverage....
Looks like it has Mil Air
PC Programmable/Controllable
1000 Chans
NWR SAME
5 Priority Chans (Will come in handy for psuedo trunking a couple of LTR Passports I know of)

Regarding MilAir... I see no reference of it in the manual.

An interesting error in the manual: While it does say that it has 1000 channels, it goes on to say that it's broken up into 10 banks of 50.

Am I missing something here? I don't see any mention to Alphatags in the user manual. This unit just looks like a souped up BCT-8. Given that it doesn't appear to have a dot matrix style display I don't see how alphatags could be possible. Otherwise they would be pretty crude like the Relm MS-200 had. I'm pretty fond on my BCT-8, but the lack of alphatags would be the #1 thing on my list.

No, there are no text tags. It really is basically a BCT-8 with Signal Stalker and a few other things added, it looks like...

The addition of ctcss and dcs is big the alpha tags would be nice but could live without if they did not strip computer control....

does anyone have a release date and any idea on price.

Expected with the PRO-97, PRO-2096, January, Price Range $250.00 to $300.00, which is about par for course with new non digital scanners.

Though Uniden lied about no new digitals.. surprise the BCD396T.. due tis summer! Maybe GRE will be working on another one also?

Anyway.. Stop beotching about scanners that are not digital..... Everyone does NOT need digital. Heck Uniden is putting what, 4 new SportCats out with NASCSAR labeling and specail features.. and surprise.. NONE of them is digital.... guys.. think about it.. and youll soon see why there is not digital on every new scanner made....
