Interesting. A quick run through of the manual shows no digital, no trunking, no CTCSS/DCS. It appears to be more of a searching machine, with one touch search buttons for Weather, Maritime, Fire/Police, Air, and Ham bands. Din sized for in dash mounting. "One Touch Search" is printed along bottom of the display window. As Joe said, 300 channels. Oh and does have a PC/IF port.

Yea - it went from a planned flagship model to a dinggy model.

So let me get this straight:
-No Trunking (analog or digital)
-No CTCSS/PL
-No Alpha Tags
Who the heck is actually gonna buy this waste of counter space?? Is anyone at Radio Shack listening to what monitoring enthusiasts want in our rigs? Radio Shack did good with the PRO96/2096 but has dropped the ball with this radio...I mean at least toss in CTCSS....

It's interesting that the testing certification still lists it as a Multi Trunk Tracking scanner though.

Can they add features in after type acceptance?

:?

Sure. TA only applies to the hardware. As long as that doesn't change, you can use the same FCC TA.

Why waste time and money producing a radio like this? Why not put your resources into at least a trunktracking scanner or a NEW digital model? The 96 has been out a while, does anyone think they are planning a replacment soon?

Not everyone's needs are the same for a scanner. I now use stuff now that I never thought or new about on a scanner when I started 15 years ago. I went from a 10 channle Pro-38 to a 200 channle Pro-37 then the rest up the 96/2096 and a 97. I think for the " I wonder what's going on I here a siren let's turn on the scanner" it might be a good starter mobile/base radio.

I know a lot of people like the BC350C from Uniden. Maybe this is something along that line. A small no-frills (definitely that) mobile for those that don't need a lot of bells and whistles to do what they wanna do - and for much less money.

Maybe so. I guess if someone just wanted a plain conventional scanner this would be a nice scanner. Maybe they'll keep the price down.

Ok.. since no one else has mentioned it....

This looks to be a base/mobile version of the Pro-83. So... I would guess it'll come out at the same price (Full retail at $120).

Also, IMHO, development of scanners at Radio Shack these days seems to be driven more by marketing droids than anything else. With all the hype and anticipation of the BC396T, you'd think they would want to answer it with a unit that has similar, if not better features and capabilities. Instead they seem to be looking at price points... we want a HH and base scanner model at $100, $200, and $500. They don't care what it can do as long as they can sell it at that price.

Radio Shack might have the answers.... just not to the questions we're asking!

If GRE wants to stay in the game, they have to be working on a new model to compete with the 396. At this point they have better digital audio quality than the released Uniden models but are way behind in other features. If the 396 bests the PRO-96 in digital audio quality, GRE will really have a mountain to climb...

So RS isn't even playing catch-up, they're playing "run WAYYYYY behind and don't even try to actually compete".

It's not like Uniden has shut R&D down until next April. From what it looks like, they've already gone beyond the 396.

This scanner looks like a good deal if they price it around $150 with a sale of $100. The PRO 2051 has more features!

I do like the base/mobile style GRE has adopted again for the 2054 and hope it continues, but we really need a larger display or better font sizes.

The 2051 and 83 are Uniden OEM, this is a GRE, btw.
