Homebrew mobile / desktop BC246T cradle...

Wanted something to hold my BC246T while mobile or at my desk. Just did this the other day:

Went to Wally World, looked in the auto aisle, bought the "Euro Junior Spillmaster" cup holder made by Hoppy (www.hopkinsmfg.com), then wandered over to the craft aisle and bought some adhesive-backed thin black craft foam (in sheets of 8" x 11" or so, 2mm thick).

Cut out two sections of foam about 1.5" x 2.5" or so. Stick one on each side of the cup gripping walls.

Adjust the cup holder until there's a snug fit around your BC246T. The foam keeps it from moving / rattling. Perfect fit!

All for under $10. Good luck!

BC246 Questions

1 .... Is it any easier to program on Trunking by hand than the BC785D? Never have been able to get mine to Trunk.

2 ... Anyone coming out with a carrying case for the 246 so the readout won't get scratched up?

3 ... One of the pages had a comment about using the plastic film used to protect PDA screens on a 246 by trimming it to size? Can any Brand of this film be used or is a particular type required. Only office supply store close to me is a Office Depot.

3) It doesn't matter. They're all the same, except for size and shape. Some might be harder to read thru than others, but there's no way to know ahead of time. Since you're trimming it to your own needs, it won't matter as long as it's big enough to begin with. I put them over all my electronics that have small screens (my Pro-96 is just fine with one).

CZ #1) Are you following the steps listed for a trunking system? What do you mean you 'cannot get it to trunk'? It won't receive the control channel? It won't decode the control channel?

Know this is off-topic, but with 785D, I program a frequency in, it asks for next frequency -- which I don't have, which ends Trunk programming attempts.
As far as I know -- there is very little trunking in Central Valley of California anyway, so let the Trunk attempts go for last several months.

bc246 and i calls on edacs

i think i figured the i call thingy out.

after thinking about this problem for awhile, i found a pattern. in the edacs i listen to, all of the icalls start with i0 . i then programmed a separate talk group with this in it ( decimal 0 ). so far so good.

hope this gives a clue

I downloaded the software from Uniden.com to use with my Bc246t scanner, and I created a new system, uploaded it... and it deleted my ENTIRE scanner memory !!!!!!!!

Can I get this back?? Why did this happen??

Now when I try to upload a new system via the crappy uniden free demo software it does not write to the scanner,.... do I need the full version to write systmes to the scanner?? :?:

Please help... chris

Please tell me you read all the warnings that said it only uploads systems with a specific name while in demo version...

Does the name of your system match one of the demo-acceptable names?

I would suggest going to the RR Database on this site and click on your state then select your county, and look at all of the trunked system near you. Unless you're doing CONTROL CHANNEL ONLY scanning you're going to need more than one frequency. If it's motorola and you found the control channel (sounds like a tractor-trailer engine idling) then program that into your scanner as a motorola type II channel and then in system options choose control channel only ON. and then sit on that channel when you're in trunk mode. It will automatically find all of the frequencies and you'll begin hearing transmissions as talkgroups become active.

But biggest thing you should do is go to the database on here and look at stuff in your area which has already been identified.

PS. If you haven't figured trunk-tracking with the 785D yet, then you're gonna have the same trouble with the 246T. Most uniden tracking scanners are programmed the same way. First try to learn and understand the method, then it'll all become second nature.

I had the same problem overcoming my ignorance on EDACS. Now that I understand how an EDACS is programmed it makes sense. Just keep on it, and ask questions if you don't understand something or get stuck. But understand that trunking systems usually have 5 or more frequencies with one control frequency. With motorola systems all you need to know is the control freq. with edacs you have to know all of the frequencies and in what order they get programmed in order for it to work...

I think only Trunk activity in Fresno/Madera County area is a Winery, Prison, (& Nextel?).

===============
BC246T

With the demo-ware program included with the 246T, can I type in a file (or whatever it would be called) with all frequencies then load that into the radio, or is that program just for saving files to the HD for backups :? Found little info about program on web or Uniden site, so was curious as to what can be done with it. Have about 50 freq.'s to put in.

Ok, say I put in channels by hand like this:

1 ... 153.8450
2 ... 153.9200
3 ... 154.4400

Then I decide to program in 154.0100.
Can I insert it between the current channel's 2 and 3 as the new Channel 3, or do I wind up with 2 'Channel 3's' and have to renumber everything :?

with the software you don't number your channels you put them in a group. There is no scanner channels like 1,2,3 etc. Involved. I downloaded the software myself and find it really good some others don't like it just take some time and play with it. I like it better the the Win series software for the Pro 95 scanner espically when it comes to the entering of trunk frequencies. I purchased the software and think its really great espically when programming in alot of frequecies a big time saver. If you have any questions about the software feel free to pm me and I will try my best to help you.

Ahhhh, hmmmm, Since channel's can't be numbered, you have to type in something like

Fresno Fire One .... <frequency>
County Fire .... <frequency>
County Fire Two ... <frequency>

then? And you can't insert a new frequency between 2 that are already there lke I was describing in earlier post?

Storing a Trunked System

Cant figure out how to store a trunked system per manual page 84.
I follow steps 1-3 but after selcting the system it goes into search and store.
I never get option to select type of search I want listed on page 85 step 2.
System is not locked out and quick key turned on.

Which system are you search-and-storing? Wouldn't it be easier to simply program the IDs in of the system you want to scan?
