Look what I scored - not strictly HF (well, it does cover 25MHz upwards... :) ) from our local auction site. Ex deceased ham estate, pristine externally and just a bit dusty. Goes well but does get quite warm as per the EHam forum - may have to drill some holes in the case for cooling. Hours of play in this - it's a replacement for my Yaesu VR5000 which has succumbed to the common display disease.

I bought one these used from Universal Radio a few years back. Great radio. I always liked the looks of the R7000 and its sibling, the R71A.
It was a great addition to my AOR AR-5000 and Icom R-8500. Unfortunately, the R8500 needs to be repaired now due to the flashing display issue.

Your best bet with the 7000 is to run it off of an external 12V supply.

I've had one since about 1985 and used to run it with a number of preamps and yagis. They work nicely, but the electrolytic capacitors will degrade over time to the point where noise degrades signal and there is inadequate voltage to drive the display. Lots of write-ups on the issue and, if you're handy, you can keep that thing working for a long time. I just changed the capacitors in mine recently. I forget how many times I've done it, maybe 4 or 5 by now. Sadly, by me, everything's gone to 800 and/or digital. There's very little to listen to in the VHF or UHF bands down this way.

For the heat issue, you can place a very small fan by the rear louvers, or mount a heat sink (with thermal compound), or both. I'd hate to knock holes in something unnecessarily.

Enjoy!

Very nice find Martin! That one's gonna look great tucked into the radio shack. Icoms are so cool. I run a nice quiet "Boxer" component fan to keep the 71a from baking away. Years now.
