As I'm sure most of you are well aware, The Ohio General assembly is considering a bill (S. B. No. 336) that would make the failure to use a seat belt a primary offense; meaning that any police officer could effect a traffic stop on any vehicle simply because any occupant was not properly restrained. The reason behind this proposal is the Federal Government who is telling Ohio: "pssst, if you pass a primary seat belt law by the end of June and start issuing tickets by September 30, then we'll give you $26.8 million to use on road projects and if you don't do that by then, you'll lose out"

Now of course the police are all for it saying that "it will save lives" (and I'm sure it will) but I can all but bet that despite a laughable "anti search" clause in this bill, some members of law enforcement will be able increase their profile stops and somehow "find" probable cause to search people who don't look, act, or dress like them... I've seen it happen!

I don't always wear a seat belt nor would I ever support any law that takes away a simple personal freedom such as that....

I feel that the decision to wear a helmet or seat belt should be a personal one made by yourself or in the case of a juvenile, your parent/guardian...

So tell me, what do you think of this issue?...............

Seat belt vs helmet...

If a motorcyclist in Ohio doesn't have to wear a helmet (and only a probationary licensee has to I think), then i don't believe it should be possible for government to impose safety belt laws on us. It's a crock - The last thing the government was thinking about when they put the seat belt laws into play was the saving of lives - They may have thought about the lower cost of health care anytime injuries can be prevented and they most assuredly thought about the insane amount of revenue that can be generated by imposing such a law. As usual, it's about the bottom line.

I don't wear a seat belt either - and for the most part feel I would be safer without one than with one rofl. That especially is true if I end up driving into the Ohio River.

I think if or when this becomes law, you better wear your seat belt! Pretty much case closed.

Whether you use seat belts or not--revenue generation and probable cause issues aside--it's all about survival of the fittest.

There may be less interesting Life Flight and EMS traffic to listen to if that particular bill passes. (Or possibly more radio traffic, as there may be less fatals and more criticals surviving bad crashes and still needing transport?). Must talk about radio, or off to the Wasteland this thread will quickly go . . .

well the reason I thought of it was because of another thread that talked about how police dont care for people who travel with scanners and my scanner sits right on my dash so it is obvious what it is and now when the law sees it they cant "do anything about it" but since I don't always wear a belt, I would be more of a target. a different kind of profiling...

Ohio Seat Belt Law

When we the public get tired of all the reasons a police officer can stop us just to see if someone is carrying drugs? Our Country is sinking into communisiam and the generation that voted in the Obama crowd will live to rue the day they let this puppet take office. We have no constituation any more.

Nothing and I'm shutting it down right now.

Folks, if you want to discuss non-radio-related stuff, take it to the Wasteland or private e-mail.
