Anybody else here a conversation tonight about OHP Troopers facing 17 days of furloughs between April and June? Sounded like a budget item from what I heard.
Don't anyone become to concerned with the OHP fulough threat. The state has an incredible amount of extra money to play with this year, if DPS needs an extra $4 million to keep what few troopers we have out on the roads and with gas in their cruisers--it will happen.
KWTV News 9 reporter Nick Winkler did a story on this topic last Tuesday. It is still available on the NEWSOK.com website at the link below. The reporter discusses the furloughs with OHP Lt. Stewart Meyer, who said their budget is behind 4 Million dollars.

Besides facing furloughs if I recall they asked some troopers to stay on five more years to help with the under staffing problem. This year the five years ends those officers will retire not to mention how short they all ready and the furloughs. I think they could cut other areas not public safety. Just my thoughts
I agree. Furloughs in the Department of Corrections make the public feel like the prisoners may escape, and furloughs in OHP make the public feel like the highways may not be safe. Both of these are political moves that are highly visible to the public and are tactics by the State to get a point across somewhere in the political circles. They could furlough the governor's secretary for a month, or go to McDonalds for their political luncheons instead of having a several hundred dollar per-plate catered dining experience to save some money.
Oklahoma's government is full of a bunch of political hooey...
