Portions of the Turner Turnpike were closed for several hours Wednesday night while the Oklahoma Highway Patrol attempted to locate a possible homicide suspect, officials said.
Lt. George Brown said the OHP received a call about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday that a detective from California was following a tractor trailer that might have been harboring a murder suspect from California.
“We did receive a call that the telephone number that was possibly being used the by person of interest was pinging at a cell phone tower in Tulsa, and that’s how we were able to track the vehicle. We followed it from the Will Rogers Turnpike to the Turner Turnpike, where troopers then stopped the semi,” Brown said.
Troopers set up a perimeter around the vehicle while waiting for the investigative units from the OHP, he said.
After interviewing the driver of the tractor trailer and searching the vehicle, troopers determined his paperwork was in order and the possible suspect was not found, Brown said.
“We were convinced there was no evidence of the wanted suspect in or around the vehicle,” he said. “The FBI arrived on the scene at around 12:30 or 1, and we turned everything over to them.”
The name of the possible suspect was not released and no arrests were made, Brown said.
During the search, east and westbound turnpike lanes from the Tulsa entrance to milemarker 207 near the Kellyville exit were closed. Lanes were reopened just after 10:30 p.m., Brown said.
