Maybe this should be in the trunking forum, but I think you guysh ave hashed this stuff over so much you can lead me in the right direction better.

I actually took the time to input a different site for the TRS system this weekend while in Lawton. For over a year I have only had the OKC site setup and everything but Troop A locked out. So I start listening to Lawtonm I zip over to this site and grab the TG ID's and low and behold one for Troop A pops up.

Why? I am sure I have seen people in here discussing this before, but I have never paid attention to it. Now that I have seen it in effect, I would like to know the purpose of it.

I am pretty sure it was 41680 that came across.

Thanks,

Don Manning

So, some troop A person could have been down in Lawton for some reason and I heard his radio coming across the scanner becuase it affiliated with the Lawton site?

That is...well, that is weird. Wouldn't that person have switched his radio over to the Lawton site? I have never looked at any of this trunking stuff in depth. Programming a scanner and locking out id's is as far as I have gone. I know to come here and look for a matching one in the database though.

I guess I need to break down and get going with the Trunktracker stuff eh?

It's really very cool. Here in tulsa, everyone once in a while Cleveland CoSO just pops on in the statewide trunking system because some deputy has wandered into the range of our site. Not only can you hear the unit that is affiliating but his affiliation brings in all the traffic on that TG, no matter where they are on the network. Right now, in fact, I'm listening to the OHP Communications Center in the City giving a general broadcast to every Troop on the network — from Miami to Lawton.

Trunking is not really that complex once you get your arms around the basic principles. Just stay away from all that spooky "Odd Split TG hex CEF or dec 52976 - 16 = 52960 --> 52960 / 32 = 1655" stuff. Whatever that means.

Do you switch your cellphone to the OKC site when you travel up this way? Works the same way with a Motorola SmartZone system. Your talkgroup follows you.

Users don't need to worry about towers and T1s and hex and control channels.

They just talk.

Or not (the TGs still follow them).
