so i go into radio shack to look at getting a new scanner. they tell me that i should wait and see what okc does with their frequency change, cause the officers they have spoke with there will be no way to pick the frequencies up on a scanner due to a encryption made by motorolla for the new system. does any one know any more about this and can you give me some hints on some hand helds that i might be able to use?

thanks

Welcome to the group prayincowboy! :)

First off .. never, ever belive anything that most Radio Shack employees tell you. (Present rr.com company excluded, of course :) )

Secondly, Oklahoma City is installing a Provoice EDACS system made by Ma/Com, not Motorola. Provoice is NOT encryption!!! Provoice is simply digital modulation of voice. There may be some Provoice talkgoups that might be encrypted ... time will tell about that.

Currently, there are no scanners that can handle Provoice. You will need to buy a Provoice radio do that. Plan on spending anywheres from $700.00 or more for something like that.

If that is too much, you still should not hold off on a scanner purchase. There is an abundance of other frequencies in Oklahoma with a ton of activity to keep you busy!

Ya talk "shop" here, at radioreference.com with us, not at Radio Shack.

:)

Adding my welcome and an invite to join the ScanOKC group meeting once a month at Metro Technology Center, Adult and Continuing Education campus, 201 NE 48th Street. Date & time is usually posted here or you can join the ScanOKC Yahoo group for direct e-mail notification.

Meeting is very informal, usually any new toys from RS are brought by Matt, interesting listening is discussed, and, rumor has it, we will probably order pizza for the next meeting ( 8) , right foster006??).

Welcome to the forums, it's a great place around here. Like N5TWB said, come to the next meeting, lots of fun and you learn quite a bit. I'm actually a RadioShack manager here @ 63rd and Western, and usually wind up fielding everyone's scanner questions that go into RS.

OKC is going digital, but no reason not to get a scanner. In fact we just came out with a couple new ones that are rather nifty.
If you have any questions you can call me @ work 405-843-8418, just ask for Matthew.

Also, shoot me a PM with the store that you went to if you would, so that I can call and let them know they are giving out incorrect information. Thanks,

Matthew Wilkes - KE5AFU

OKC is going digital,

Everything I have seen regarding the new system is that it is a combination of Provoice and Analog, with no information out yet on what will be Provoice and what will be analog.

Date OKC goes online trunked

I'm hearing June 18th as the date for the beginning of the OKC changeover to trunked. Has anyone else heard that? I heard that at Radio Shack at NW Expressway & MacArthur.

Haven't heard that but it seems ambitious given the number of mobile units to be installed. I haven't seen any OCPD units with an 800 antenna beyond what they have for the MDT yet.

It's at Rockwell and NW Expressway, they moved but only from one end of the shopping center to the other. And I had mentioned to them that July 18th was a date that I had heard, but wasn't for sure on. Guess it got lost somewhere along the way.
