I found an old base station, a GM 23B, and was wondering if it was still viable, and legal. I'd heard 23 channel units aren't anymore. And yes, I'm studying for my Tech license, so this isn't going to be my only radio use.

To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.
The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

It would be illegal for a retailer to sell it as new.
I would have to go digging in Part 95 to be sure, but I suspect it is legal to use.
Worth the trouble when you can use a modern mobile with a power supply? Probably not.

Your "old" GM 23B should still be legal since no license is required for CB use and as long as it is/was FCC certified. It is probably still viable too and while 40 channels units are being sold now, if the old still works why not use it for just a little fun and nostalgia.
And good luck on your Tech license so you'll need another radio for that use anyway...

If you have a working older unit, good for you. I have a working 23 channel mobile unit. I have used it in conjunction with 40 channel units. (The only problems are 1. The obvious frequency limitations, and 2. I have more transceivers than I do antennas.) Anyways, they're still usable, so why not hold on to them ?

It is more of a new project now. It receives quite well, but doesn't seem to transmit. The meter will move when TX, but after releasing the mic button, it squeals for a few seconds, and then goes back to normal. Best antenna I could come up with is a car mag mount, and while I've got a large cast iron firepit in the backyard, it's on a deck, and not exactly a good ground. I did take it apart, and it is a Uniden in disguise.
