OK. I thought I was smarter than this, but apparently not. I just got my TRX1 in and opted to program myself. I am pretty good a stuff like this, but, I cannot figure this one out. I am able to scan a good bit on the download I did, but, have tried to get only the Gulfport PD on the scanner, or even Gulfport PD with other stuff, and I am not doing something right, because I have yet to get them to show up. What am I doing wrong. Can someone help and old scanner from way back some into the digital age. TIA

Hello Kccaterer,

Gulfport and all of the law enforcement agencies in Harrison county, except for the Dept. of Marine Resources and the Highway Patrol, use EDACS ProVoice, which the Whistler scanners won't receive. You can however monitor Gulfport Fire and Long Beach fire, as they are analog EDACS.

To listen to law enforcement in Harrison county you need one of the Uniden scanners, such as the BCD536HP, BCD436HP, BCD996P2, BCD325P2, or the new one they are about to release, the SDS100. Plus you also need to purchase the ProVoice upgrade for it.

I happen to have a BCD536HP, with DMR and ProVoice upgrades that I'm looking to sell.

Thank you for the response. I had seen your post and was hoping you would see it. I was really feeling stupid that I could not figure it out. Email or message me. I am interested in both the scanner and your knowledge. I live in Gulfport

You are quite welcome. Shortly after I posted above, a gentleman on FB bought the scanner I had for sale. Although I don't still have the radio available, I'll still be more than happy to try and help answer any questions that you may have, regarding what you need to be able to monitor what you're wanting to.

Please, NEVER feel stupid about not figuring some of this stuff out. It does get kind of complicated! I certainly don't know all there is to know about it, but I do alright with it, and am glad to help whenever I can.

I was going to send you an email, but it told me that your account was set up not to receive emails, and you have to have a few more posts here on Radio Reference in order to be able to send and receive private messages.

Too bad. I was interested. I do want your review on the four units you listed. I generally am never very far from my home. I am retired and here a great deal. I did like the WIFI aspect of the 536, since it seemed I could listen from my Iphone while I work in the shop or in the yard. How well does that work. And, it seems everyone is waiting and making moves to get the SDS100. Seems a bit much for a newbie, but wanted your take on all of these. And likely because I am new to this forum, nothing is showing up for me yet. I can post my email address here if you feel it would not be a problem.

Welcome Kccaterer, and welcome to Gulfport! I've been scanning for years and have found MANY systems that are not in the database. Mainly DMR and NXDN stuff. If you have a frequency that you need to know what it is, I might be able to help. So far, the past couple of years, I've been the main one to add and edit the Harrison county section of the database. If you are interested in monitoring the Emergency services here, Bama9999 is totally correct that it is all on an EDACS Provoice system. They are very active and I have tons of unknown talkgroups that I've found, but haven't identified or verified yet

In the area, about the only things that I haven't been able to find the systems for is the Gold Coast casino and Treasure Bay. I have the Boomtown, Scarlet Pearl, Island View, Hard Rock, Beau Rivage, Margaritaville, IP Casino, and parts of the Palace and Harrahs (Biloxi Grand) casinos, as well as parts of the Hollywood casino in Bay St. Louis.

Any info you need I'll try and help.

Thanks Bill. I sent the TRX1 back and am now considering what to replace it with. I am planning on only being a casual scanner, to fill the dead space as I do yard work and woodworking. So, anything to can suggest to replace it with and why would be appreciated.

Of the scanners that I mentioned above, I have only had experience with the 536. I've enjoyed both of the ones that I've had, and they both did an excellent job. The siren app for the Iphone seems to work better for listening than the android app. The Iphone app will let you hear the entire transmission while the android app cuts off the end of the transmission before it finishes. You said you have an Iphone, so that shouldn't be an issue for you. Since the 436 is portable, you could listen to it while outside without bothering with an app.

Outside of that, it really comes down to personal preference as to which scanner might best suit you. I like the built-in database on the 536/436, but if you aren't going to be using the radio while traveling that isn't as big of a concern. I've heard good things about all the models mentioned, and some mention simulcast issues with them. Personally I've never had any issues listening to anything on Harrison county's system or on MSWIN with the 536.

Thank you gentlemen. I have gotten the scanner, BCD436HP, and have Harrison SO Gpt PD, Blx PD and AMR programmed and working. But, I think am only scanning primary channels to each. I have heard dispatch direct units to TAC channel, or units request others to move to a different channel, and I do not think I am hearing them. I was hoping to hear the joint comman for spring break this past weekend and could not find anything. I just need to know what i need to make sure I am scanning all I need to, and how do i get these separated into favorites on the BCD436HD. Enjoying it so far, but, still struggling to understand what channels are out there and then how to get them into the scanner. Thanks, and hopefully I can become a help to others as I learn more.

Thanks for the response. I did open the nationwide option, and then turned on the tac and talk services. This should open up the other channels assigned to each of these? I do not need to enter the frequency for any of the cities or companies?

Depends on local frequency/system usage and your programming.

If I am reading the earlier posts correctly -- if the additional talkgroups are on the ProVoice (or other) system(s) you've already programmed and you programmed all of those talkgroups (and assuming they aren't encrypted), you shouldn't need to do anything else.

Assuming this is the system:
https://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=977

and you've programmed the entire system but aren't (or weren't) hearing some things, chances are that the default SERVICE types were only resulting in your hearing dispatch and some other things. I always recommend turning ALL service types on initially -- some things may not even been "tagged" with the correct service type. You can always adjust from there.

If this did not solve your issue, we can dive deeper into your programming.
