I know that Bradford County rescue units used to be 60, 61, etc., housed at station 6, and all personel were 601, 602, etc. The same is true for Union county (Housed at station 5, employee numbers as well) and Clay county (Rescue 71, 72).

What other counties were part of this original numbering plan (which seems to have originated in jacksonville), when did this assigning happen, and who still follows it?

I do know that Bradford county now goes by "Medic" units, 1,2,4,6. Union has Rescue 1, 3 and 4 and clay still uses the old rescue numbers.

Any more info would be great.

Thanks!

Hey there,

Clay County is using ambulance unit numbers 70-79. Rescue 78 and 79 have not been assigned active staff or stations as of yet. They are primarily reserve as is Rescues 1-4 and 7.

70 Green Cove Springs, south to Putnam County Line/Penney Farms (20, 24, 16)
71 Lake Asbury/Doctors Inlet (15, 16, 17)
72 City of Orange Park to Duval County Line (19, 18, 17, 22, 26)
73 Camp Blanding and Northern Keystone Heights to Bradford County line (10, 23, 14, 13, 16)
74 Middleburg/Clay Hill to Bradford/Duval County line if needed (14, 13, 15, 17, 26)
75 Keystone Heights/McRae to County Line to Bradford and Putnam County Lines (10, 23)
76 Orange Park and Southern Orange Park (18, 17, 19, 26)
77 North Green Cove through Fleming Island to City of Orange Park (22, 19, 20, 17)

The numbers in parenthesis are the districts that they cover.

According to Clay CAD, they still have the old numbers like 61, 62, 64, 66 for Bradford County. But they do say the appropriate Medic Numbers when talking to us on the radios.

Putnam County is now using numbers 80-99. They were using ALS or BLS and the fire district number that their home station was in. This did change the other day.

81 Palatka
82 Satsuma
83 East Palatka
84 Interlachen
85 Palatka
86 Cresent City
87 Melrose
I have also heard a Rescue 91 in Putnam County but do not know what that is assigned for.

Jacksonville, Gainesville/Alachua, Marion and St. Johns Counties all use the station numbers that the ambulances are located at.

Ex: Rescue 9, would be located at station 9. Gainesville/Alachua used to use Medic numbers like Bradford does.

I have no idea about Columbia, Baker, Nassau and Ghilchrist counties!!!

Back in the 90's when I moved here they were rescue 80-89. In the late 90's they started to get rescue 5 and so on. Our rescues depends what station it is. Like St 14 has R14 St 5 has R5 etc...

I'm familiar with how the currents are currently numbered, but I mostly wanted to find out what the old system was, where it came from and whom it applied to.

Thanks.

the apparatus are called: Engine 20, Engine 30 etc.
Rescues are:Rescue 20, Rescue 30 etc.

The volunteer stations are single digits-3,4,5,7,8,9,10, and 11

Battalion 1- is the Captain

hope this helps!

I do know that until about 15-20 years ago JFRD rescue units did not share their station numbers. For example rescue 6 was at station 1, rescue 14 was at station 32, etc. I don't know why they were numbered that way.

Old Numbers

Back in the 70's as EMS services started to take over from the funeral homes and EMS was by state law placed under the authority of each individual county (i.e. Certificate of Necessity and the such), all the Northeast Florida Counties came together at a regional planning meeting and came up with that old numbering system. Duval (JFD) was 0-20's. Baker County was the 30's, Nassau County was the 40's, Union County was the 50's, Bradford County was the 60's, Clay was the 70's, St Johns was the 80's. I believe this was the way they set it up. It lasted through the 1980's and than they started to change them. I used to work for Union County EMS in 1992-1995 and we had a 1986 Wheeled Coach Type 3 that was Rescue 51. When they bought the 1990 WC Type 1 ambulance it was labeled Rescue 1 and than the 1992 WC Type 2 ambulance Rescue 2 and Rescue 51 remained as a beat up old reserve. I cant remember if Putnam County did the NE Florida numbering system. Another reason that system went away is that Jacksonville Fire Rescue wound up using more than 29 numbers. I dont know if this helps or not. Marc

A correction, Nassau County was the 20's and not the 40's as earlier posted. I want to say that Columbia County used the 40's series numbers. So, i guess Duval (Jacksonville) had Rescue 1 thru 10. So they must have run out of those numbers quickly. I know that JFRD now has 34 Rescues, but need like 16 more Rescues in the 10 year Plan adopted in 2008 by Jacksonville City Council. Not going to happen with this miserable economy and the increase in Homestead Exemption rates as passed by the Florida Congress.

I guess in the early days of EMS there wasnt the amount of abuse of the system like there is today as well as explosive population growth in Florida. Shows like Rescue 911 with William Shatner and Code Red with Gil Gerrard really made 9-1-1 and EMS common knowledge. Plus, society has really changed in the last 35 years as well. Drug seekers, transients, obesity and a general lack of taking care of oneself all add in.

I believe Gilchrist County also uses station numbers but differ. "County stations" start at 1, 2, etc. but "town" stations seem to start in the 20's.
