Recently retired so I'm just getting back into this craft.
I have an old NooElec R820T dongle that I'm trying to get going will with AIS decoding. I have a little magnet mount antenna, about 18" long, and I was getting some data with it. I also have a couple of 8' VHF antennas so I tried hooking one of them up. So I tied in the Shakespeare 5206-C and checked the weather broadcasts at/around 162.550Mhz and there was a noticeable difference.
But when I tried AIS decoding, which is each side of 162Mhz, it suddenly showed no data. Since this Shakespeare antenna has a 6db gain could it have been over driving my dongle?
