If you visit San Diego, there is the San Diego Model Railroad Museum in Balboa Park and the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum (full size trains) in the community of Campo about 55 miles out of town. It's easy access by freeway most of the way.

That is another I would recommend. Also further north of Los Angeles is the Fillmore and Western in Fillmore.
