'Alton said most neighboring communities, including North Olmsted and North Ridgeville, use the statewide MARCS radio system, which the township will be switching to for improved signal quality and interoperability'

Amazing that they factor in consolidated dispatch costs, but no mention of MARCS user fees compared to GCRCN fees.

That's becoming more and more common. One group decides on the state-wide system, another decides on a local system, and for the two to mutual aid, they have to subscribe to both. If it was VHF/UHF, all they would have to do is program in the other channels, and turn a knob.

I'd anticipate both systems being programmed into radios if anyone is smart enough to realize how closely they've worked together in the past. Each radio should have a zone with National Interoperability Channels programmed in, allowing UHF coms, but so few field officers ever train or drill to use them.

Incorrect. Statewide agreements in Ohio allow for fee-free mutual aid use. You pay fees on your primary system, but not the mutual aid-only system.

Somebody should tell them that, cause it ain't happening. MARCS might be doing it correctly, but local systems seem to be reluctant to let others on for free if it isn't their primary. Sometimes it's even said that certain brands that work perfectly aren't allowed.

There's a big hitch too. As we've said other places, most don't know how to get to those channels, often not even knowing they exist. But the range on those is of course extremely limited. 7/800 MHz simplex doesn't talk very far.

Given Olmsted Township's fiscal history, they'll probably end up paying on both regardless, if they're not already now 😂

“Mutual aid”. That’s a term open to very wide interpretation.

Bay Village, Rocky River, Westlake, North Olmsted and Fairview Park all share the same dispatch TG and they do an excellent job of helping each other.

Their main shared TG is more and more crowded, and I noticea lot more of their traffic going to their individual department tac channels.

And they've been doing it since the 60's.

I've always wondered if there was a major derailment in Olmsted Falls/Township area, how trained are the surrounding FDs in handling something like that? Plus three different radio systems in the surrounding area that might respond; MARCS, GCRCN and 5-City Harris.

That’s a nightmare, and instead of using UHF national tactical channels (as few train or drill using them) they do what happened in East Palestine and start handing out MARCS radios. The problem being, in this area, coverage has historically struggled.
