Another thing to bring up. On GMRS channel 18, some college somewhere has been using this frequency for their public safety operations. Is this legit? I think I remember hearing once that the upper GMRS channels can be used for business use now. Is this true?

I think it might be UMASS.

I don't understand what you guys are talking about when you refer to GMRS "18" or "20." There are 8 GMRS frequencies for simplex operation and another 8 that are paired exactly 5 mhz away for repeater input only. I thought the typical nomenclature was to refer to the last 3 digits of the frequency, since they all start with 462, when describing a GMRS "channel" (e.g., 550, 575, 600, 625, 650, 675, 700, 725). I have no clue what frequency you are talking about when you say "18."

Are you talking about FRS or the "interstitial" frequencies? There are only 14 FRS frequencies in the US, and there is no duplex (or repeater) operation allowed on those at all.

Where is 675 aka "channel 20"?

I had been refrencing FRS and GMRS Frequencies
but I'll just refer to it as 625.

I've been hearing a lot of repeater use on 625 and 550 by EMS and public safety lately. Allowed?

Got it, thanks. That varies by manufacturer, as well.

BTW, I stand corrected on the KAG0353 repeater on 462.675 in NYC. That [edit on] person [edit off] Bruce is back on the repeater and right back to his old antics.

GMRS CH 20 repeater is closed. unforunltly the great repeater was closed due pirates and unauthorized chatter. you can't hit the repeater unless you have the correct input PL. the input frequency would be on the 467.XXXX MHz for GMRS. however having FRS radio triggering GMRS repeaters is illegal. the must be the same
output 462.550
input 467.550

A few things....even though it is generally frowned upon, you can use any of the other GMRS inputs for a repeater, but my guess would more likely be that they are using a DPL input and a PL output. It's much harder to figure out the input, although not impossible. The last option, and this would require some expertise, and ensure security would be to use a non-standard PL for the input. Using something like 138.2Hz for an input PL pretty much guarantees that no unauthorized users will get in, but you're users have to have radios capable of accepting the non-standard PL.

Good point. Our company radios are set up in this manner.

I think thats a great, I think public safety should do this. Or have a dual code, like a DPL input and a PL output. It would help get jammers out of the way.

Anybody if there is any open GMRS repeater systems in NY/LI area?
Planning on getting my GMRS licence but don't want it to be a waste if there's no open GMRS repeaters.

If theres a fee how much monthly or yearly?

The vast majority of GMRS repeaters in the NYC/LI Metro Area are privately owned CLOSED repeater systems. Most repeater owners frown upon outsiders using their system without prior permission and/or membership dues/maintenance fees.
